ignition key broken in the ignition

This sucks so much - the key has broken off inside the cylinder. I have had to leave the beast on a side street miles from home all by itself. When I go back in the morning any suggestions as to what I might do if the broken piece wont come out so easily. I was hoping a pliers might just pull the piece out. Or perhaps a lesson on hot wiring would be in order so at least I can take it home!

Just use the stub to turn on and off the car.

I had to do this last year.

Pretty easy to get this all out by taking the steering wheel off and then accessing the screws that hold the collar around the ignition switch.

Late cars will allow you to pull the cylinder lock out and then remove the set screw in the side and push in the clip and the switch and cylinder will come apart. Then push the key stub out.

Oh and disconnect the positive battey lead.

Thanks for getting back to me....I spent an hour or more this morning picking at the piece and eventually removed it from cylinder.....now I see I only have an old valet key to run the car but cannot access the front trunk so I guess I will take out the cylinder to get the proper key cut. There's always something fun to do with a 914!

I can't remember what is different about the valet key but a lock smith should be able to make you a new one to operate all the locks from the valet key
Or get a new blank from this sites store and get the blank cut to open everything and leave the valet key original.

The key blank is different, the cut is the same. So if you can get the regular key blank, you can have the master key cut from the valet key.

Thanks for the information Dave. I had bought my blank from Pelican late last year but had forgotten to get it cut. It's on my list for tomorrow!
