'73 Shift rod u-joint rebuild...instructions?

Hi there,

is there an online resource on how to rebuild the shift-shaft u-joint at the firewall?

it doesn't appear that the main "pin" comes out, which appears to be the only way to get the new bushings in.

Thanks in advance, Mark

That pin is pressed in.

A vise, a deep socket and a bolt work. You use the bolt to push the pin into the opening of the deep socket. DO NOT hammer on it or you will be unhappy and poorer. Make sure you have the spots for the cone screws pointing the right way when you do it.

Ah, yes, a few superficial whacks with the hammer yielded nothing, so I'll do the press tomorrow

be careful, those couplers are aluminum I believe, won't stand for much hammerin'. Might want to do all the bushings while it is apart.

The coupler will break if you try to hammer the pin out. Guess how I know?

A day after hammering it out, mine broke on the road about 100 miles from my house. I managed to duct tape it with only one bushing still in there and get home.

Set it up in a vise so that a deep socket acts as a reciever, use a bolt to drive the pin into the socket, put the new bushings in the ears of the coupler, use the vise to press the pin back in.

yes yes yes...use the bolt and socket and you'll be done in minutes! While you are at it just replace all the bushings and you'll be amazed at how different it shifts!

I have excellent bushings in my existing shaft's u-joint, but the shaft diameter has been narrowed down by about 1/4" from one of the previous owner's neglect on the centering bushing at the transaxle: so I have a new shaft that came with the u-joint, but it doesn't have any bushings (nada) in the u-joint.

So, great shaft, bad u-joint vs bad shaft/great u-joint.

Mark..well doesn't that suck! Say, you should go to www.914world.com. Extremely large 914 forum. If you search for "928" you'll run across info on Rick Ollah's (spelling?) "alien"...he has a 928 euro engine in a 914. I've seen the car in person and it is very cool.

You'll have a quest for speed after awhile..I'm dropping in a 3.2l carrera engine..easy upgrade!

Yes, I'd love to have the Alien 914 someday: I've followed pictures on that car for at least 7 years or so.

I'm a member of both forums: I'm "Porschesolution" on that one.

Mark
