Question Ignition Wires Choices

I searched the past posts on ignition wires but didn’t really find the info I was looking for.

My stock F.I. 2.0L needs new wires. Of course the first place I looked was here at PP and they have these: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_igniti_pg2.htm#item11

After following up with PP on exactly what there description of “high-quality” meant, it turns out the PP wires are “oem Porsche and designed for your engine”. I assume that means they are 7mm Bosch of the correct length for T4’s and with the correct ends to clear the T4 sheet metal?

Anyway, I didn’t look around a lot at other vendors, but I did run across these 8mm Taylor Spiro wires at http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=350. Which by the way are 40% cheaper than the PP wires and come in ~kewl~ colors.

So while my bottom line question is should I just get the PP OEM wires and not mess with anything but stock, my more theoretical questions have to do with the benefit I might get from 8mm wires vs. 7mm wires, going with wires made of different materials like the Taylors, etc. I mean, will I get a better running engine, better fuel economy, a more cleaner burning engine, or does it just not make a difference? Remember, this is a stock FI 2.0L.

Thanks in advance for everyone’s willingness to share the knowledge...

I use stock OEM wires on our stock 2.0l 914 and 8.5 racing wires on the race car that I make from scratch. The stock engine has stock coil, etc but the race car has an MSD system and coil and puts about 32K volts to the plugs at high RPM. The stock system is no where that high the stock wires work well.

I use the OEM ones, I had some of the cool looking red ones but switched back the the OEM ones last weekend. The aftermarket ones seemed not to seal as well around the plugs, I actually lost a cylinder due to it getting wet. The factory ones clip on better, plus my mechanic said, like John did, that for a street 2.0 the OEM are good. Good luck.

For what it's worth, I bought some 914 plug wires at a FLAPS a number of years ago, and they did not fit my 2.0 engine. They would have been fine for any other Type IV, but the wires were a little too short for the 2.0 914 engine, because the plugs are angled outward and so the ends are further away from the distributor.

You might want to check the ones from CB--or at the very least, make certain you can return them and get your money back. Some places won't allow you to return electrical parts.
