914 handling problem
I'm not sure where to post this, but here goes. I have a 72 914 with a 911 front suspension. I have noticed that in left hand, high speed sweepers the car does an odd thing. I'll turn the wheel and set the car up for the turn, but rather than take a set the car feels like it turns in a few more degrees without any further steering wheel input. Not fun. I'd read an article about how wear on the bottom of the strut was the problem when the old pinch type strut was used, but these are the newer style strut with the retaining pin. Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

What are the alignment specs? Has the car been corner balanced? What tires and pressures? If the alignment is over a year old then it is probably time to do it fresh.

All of the above was done/checked. It was actually aligned twice by the Porsche shop here in town (Protech). The problem was there before the alignment and after both realignments. Keep in mind the car does this at speeds well below its cornering limits. My 90 Ford Ranger felt more secure at 90 through this turn than this car did at 80 with newer Bridgestones on 7 and 8 inch rims. Its not an oversteer or understeer issue and the toe setting is good. Even my ratty old 2 liter 914 felt better. Wierd.

Well if you completely trust the shop that is fine, I still have the shop that has taken care of our Porsche collection for nearly 20 years give me a list of all the settings. Having said that, my best guess is a bent strut or that the spindle angle to the strut tube on both sides is not equal, That will cause a wandering condition when turning. Also if the front of one on the torsion bar mounts has been dented up, then turing will be affected so I would suggest doing some dissassembly and measuring. I would also look closely at the front and rear bushings as one might be failing.

What condition is the rest of the front suspension? Wheel bearings,balljoints,tie rods?

What condition are your shocks in? If you are using worn shocks with no rebound it will allow the rear end to become upset and will allow the car to turn in really spooky like mid corner. Specially if you throttle lift a bit.
Worn trailing arm bushings will allow your toe to go all whacky under cornering loads. |

Good thoughts. I did get a print out of the alignment and corner weights which seemed okay based on what other people have posted. I'll keep disassembling the suspension, but everything looks good so far. Most of the parts in the car are newer pieces and seem tight. The car was redone several years back and not driven much. Shocks seem to in very good shape. I'll keep digging. I really appreciate everybodys input. THANKS!

Check your right REAR suspension bushings.
