What coil to get?

I just got a Crane XR3000 points replacement. I forgot to get a new coil w/o the ballast resistor, doh. I was wondering which coil to get, it is suggested to go with either the PS60, LX91, or PS91 coil. Pelican has the LX91 listed but I like how the PS60 looks more like my std blue coil. Is there really any difference between the two? The Crane web page www.cranecams.com says this model is for race or high RPM street...will it hurt to run it on my non-high RPM car? Thanks for any ideas!!!

Nathan

Nathan, I have an XR3000 and I'm using a PS60 coil. Works fine, haven't noted any performance problems from idle to redline. In fact, to be quite honest, while I like this setup for the fact that I don't have to replace points or adjust the dwell frequently, I can't say that I can tell any performance difference between it and points ignition that is in good condition, using a Bosch Blue coil. Both setups work very well.

I think you got that backwards. A 4 cylinder has 4 sparks per two revolutions while an 8 cylinder has 8. At 1000 RPM the coil in the four would be sparking 2000 time a minute while the 8 would be sparking 4000 times a minute.

In addition, the new hype in performance upgrading these day is geared around imports with the manufactures following suit in designing products for whats in demand.

Oh yeah, I'm not expecting some crazy performance increase or anything basically. I was just wanting to know if I could use my old coil or if I should go w/ the suggested PS60. I might as well go w/ the PS60 and not risk messing anything else in the ignition system up.

Am I right in my thinking that the ballast resistor on a system that doesn't need it will not hurt anything....but if you had a system that needed a ballast resistor and didn't use one you could fry your system?

Thanks for the info guys.

Nathan (hopefully running "in tune" soon)

Hello,
Just go with what Crane is recommending for the coil. The LX91 is a newer version of the PS91 coil. They both come with the pigtail for the pos+ and neg- side as well as the boot and connector for the coil tower.

We have the PS91 on the shelf.

Regards,
