Well, after fixing both the oil seal and the o ring at the shift support on my tranny, I have found that the majority of the oil was coming from somewhere else. It seems to be dripping down the right side of the case. Anybody have an idea as to where it could be coming from? I can't seem to figure it out.

I think a better question is "is there a place where the 901 tranny doesn't leak"?

I fixed one leak and the trans oil would start leaking from the next weakest seal.
If it is coming from the right side, I would check the output shafts (where the inner CV joints are). That's where mine starting leaking after replacing the o-ring at the speedometer angle drive. I ordered the main seal and the output shaft seals from Pelican...but after reading Brads post...I'm beginning to wonder where it's going to leak next after replacing these three. Gotta love it.... well, I wish I could just deal with it, but I'm talking about a pretty serious oil leak. I mean it's spewing all over my heat exchanger when I drive, and smoking like mad. All the oil seems to just be dripping off the bottom of the gearbox when the car is parked though, and the top and sides are pretty dry.

There is a pressure relief valve on the upper right side about midway on the trans.
How about the main seal at the front of the trans, near the clutch, a leak will exit oil out the bottom of the trans...if so, then your clutch wont last long. |

I think Jeff's talking about the breather vent. It helps air get in and out of the transmission. It's on the right side, not the left, but who knows how the air moves around up under the trunk by the tranny?
The hole in it should be oriented 45 degrees to the right of straight ahread. (Haynes has a drawing somewhere, though I remember it being difficult to find.) I've heard that ones pointing back can spew tranny oil. It's worth a look if nothing else. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

well, after some investigation, the only thing with fresh oil all over it is the reverse light plug. Do these leak often? What kind of seal is there between it and the case?

Try this...get a black light and shine on the transaxel. Any trans fluid leaking will glow bright white. It is easy to find the source(s) of the leak. try it. it works great and on motor oil too....
