I am trying to seperate the outer tie rod end from the link arm on the strut. Took the castle nut off, soaked overnight with pentrating oil. I have drove my tie rod seperator until the tool is scarring up. The tie rod is not even thinking about seperating. This is not the first time in my life that I have seperated a tie rod. But this is the first 914 tie rod that I have seperated. Is there a trick? I have tried everything I know but putting heat on it, and I don't want to do that. Any ideas?

You will need something like this.
What wrong with a little heat? It does help. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_914_strut_removal/pic3.JPG ------------------ CWP/VIR 72 914 L20E in rusto. 73 914 L20E 2.0L in resto. http://members.rennlist.com/a914lover [This message has been edited by Conrad W Peden (edited 08-26-2001).] |

The one I used was from Eastwood, it looks similar but is a lot cheaper than the Porsche tool.

Could not get mine out no matter what I tried
ended up cutting off the end removing the strut assembly and having it pressed out at a machine shop//// Just would not budge. ------------------

I went through the same thing...Soak the ends for a couple of days with liquid wrench. Drive in the fork. Use a jack under the handle of the fork and raise the car about 1/4 inch above the jack stand. Heat the arm around the tie rod end. Lightly hammer the tie rod.
Worked like a charm for me. BTW, I ended up tearing the rubber boot that keeps the grease in there.Kemo 78SC |
