Engine swap question
Hello All,
I'm floating this idea in the 914 forum because you guys are the most open minded on the PP site. I've asked questions concerning the 914/Subie swap without any flame or critical remarks, thanks for the tolerance. Here is the latest idea. A Subie in a Boxster. I've been checking the Ebay ads and running Boxsters are really dropping in price. Given the questionable engine reliability in the early models, there will likely be wounded Boxsters on the market at ridiculous prices. The Subaru seems attractive as far as potential power and price. Perhaps KEP might come on board with an adapter. Any ideas on this one? Thanks, Jim S.

that is not bad at all. How much for an STI motor in a crate from the land of the rising sun?

The Boxsters are really cheap on ebay I saw one sell for $12k the other day with relatively low miles and in good condition a 1997 I think. As for the subaru motor, at least it is not a chevy 350

cost....I think that a 270hp WRX motor is around 6k complete. I think that the 3.6 P engine is well above that figure.

Do you know if the wrx motor will bolt to the boxster tranny? That is probably the biggest hurdle. And exhaust routing, I am sure it is tight under there.

That looks like a killer idea. I saw a non running boxter on houston craigslist for 7,900. Sounds like a very sweet project, If you have the time and money.

I have seen folks do 996 3.4 conversions for about $8000. Why not keep it "all in the family". (Donor used motors can go for as little as $2500!)

This is a bit OFF TOPIC, how about a Boxster engine in a 914? Has it been done?

the boxster engine is physically too wide for the 914. in order to make it fit, you have to relocate the complete rear suspension pickup points outward. that also means cutting into the rear of the longs. that's one HUGE fabrication project for a very questionable (at best) "improvement" ... ![]() PS: i just put a 3.6L engine in my 914. it's from a '95 993. some minor fabrication required, but otherwise, the engine drops right in there and looks like it's supposed to be there ... i spent 1/10 th of the time (if that) and probably didn't spent more money either. with a chip and headers, i get ~300 FWHP from a otherwise stock engine. try to beat that ...
