I had to redo the wires with my 914/6 conversion race car and here is how they are hooked up:

D+ goes to the blue wire which is #2 on the 14 pin relay board connector.

B+ goes to the big red batt wire

D- goes to the brown wires which are ground wire(s) Make sure this is in good condition.

DF is not used on an internal regulated conversion (on mine any ways)

WT Hell wire looks like an exciter I guess and would not be used.

The problem with this, unless you have an engine dyno to check things, the wires have to be all connected and the cooling shroud in place so you can test it and it it does not work it is a big pain to pull the carbs, shroud, etc to redo things.

here is my problem....I am (assuming that the diagram/pic in the my thread is correct AKA the back of my 911 ALT is correctly labeled) just wiring the D+/D-/DF to my external voltage regulator which will be mounted independantly. (they correspond to the plug going to the VR froom the 914-4 ALT) then just ground the ALT body and run my power(B+) to the batt/starter sollinoid. Call it a day.

I HAVE NO regulator plate and a custom wiring harness.

SO with that in mind I PRESUME that it will be easy as pie...unless I am wrong??? so am I right? MOST importantly in my labeling the back of the 911 ALT in the above linked thread?

Thanks

Josh

I didn't see where you mentioned an external voltage regulator and I am not real familiar with any other alternator except the internal regulated ones. I would guess that the hookups would then be the same as you mentioned.

Hey Man.
I don't have the answer, but if you built that beautiful engine in the pictures then you have a good deal of ability. This problem should be easier to solve than some of the other tasks you have had to deal with.
Lemme bounce some ideas off of you.
If you have the original alternator from the 914 and know where the wires of that wiring harness connected to ....
Step back and take a look at those facts. Then take a multimeter or a test light and compare the readings to those of the original Alt and Harness. ( Short, Ground, Complete circuit, etc.) I would just look and compare readings of the connection lugs on the new Alt to those readings of the old Alt.
Get a piece of paper and a pencil and diagram out similarities and differences as you discover them by measuring them with your meter / light.
Two things are for sure.
#1: You certainly aren't going to risk burning out something based on what someone here says .... i.e. an opinion
#2: By the time you figure it out, you'll know it so well that you could sell a book on the subject
Put your faith in what you know. Good luck.
Now get a meter, paper, pen and resolve this problem.
Rick

So far as I can tell there are only 4 wires of importance to me, the DF/D+/D- (all Voltage Reg stuff and the BAW (big assed wire) that goes to the starter solinoid (AKA battery to charge it.) Oops also the ground strap to the ALT.....so 5 wires!

Well I found more that one thread and response here that says the black wire was the DF lead so I am good I wired it and ran with it.

Hey Rick, mabey we'll run into one another @ one of the local PCA events!

Thanks guys

Josh

Woah ...

Josh,
Holy cow Man!
That is a work of art.
I can't believe that you have time to do this and still respond to my post as to how get my hoses and vacuum lines hooked up. The fact that you'd do this speaks voulmes about you. You're a good guy. ( Hey ... Josh is a good man! )
I'm trying to keep my little 1.7 as close to original as I can, but your project is off the hook ... I am blown away!
I like the Citrus Green accents. What is that color code?
Be sure to video the initial firing up of the engine.
Wonderful!
Thank you ...
Rick

Beautiful work! Beautiful daughter! Looks like you're about a year in front of me.... Funny thing--my daughter has a bunny like that which never left her side for the first six years of yer life. I'll be picking your brain on the conversion....
