Do any of you use a collapsable spare in place of a full spare? If so, how did you go about fitting one?

Step 1: Bolt it on.
Step 2: Inflate it. This assumes you have a five-bolt conversion and a five-bolt collapsible spare. You might be able to fit the tire from one of those spares onto a four-bolt steel rim--or have the center of the five-bolt collapsible spare wheel cut out and a four-bolt center welded in. I used to run a collapsible spare (now race car) and this is how I did it. I bought a 14 inch fuchs (5 bolt car) and found a 14 inch collapsible tire in a junk yard from a 300zx. I also found the pressure bottle that came with the nissan to inflate the car. I had this tire mounted onto my rim and double checked the inflated height to be a good match with my street tires. The reason I used a 14 inch wheel is because the colapsed height was low enough to stand the wheel/tire combo upright in my front trunk and still close the front hood. I pulled the gas tank and bought the appropriate length/size of all thread. I positioned the set up and welded two large nuts into the inside of the bulkhead, so that the 2 pieces of all-thread screwed into these and then stuck out into the trunk to mount the wheel onto. I used another set of nuts as a stop behind the wheel so that it would mount tight against the bulkhead. I cut the all-thread to the appropriate length and then used wheel nuts to hold the wheel on. All of this allowed me to mount my battery, accusump, and front oil cooler in the trunk and still carry a spare. brant |
