What do you guys think about installing a starter button out of a Honda S2000 in the dash of the 914?

How tough would that be to wire up? Looks kindda cool. Has anyone seen the STOLA boxster in the new Excellence? It has a starter button too...granted it has a twin turbo boxster s motor too(440hp).

rubber encased push start button.. 3.99 at kragen's.. i've got one in my car as a hot start button.. took about 10 minutes to wire up..
with a button like that, you still need the key in the car to start it up.. Jeff |

would be tight!!! But do you really need the key to start it up with? The only thing im worried about is my car being broken into and all they have to do is push a button?!?!

The button, in general, will only operate the starter motor. It doesn't send power to the FI, to the ignition, etc.

The trickest way would be to use the stock wiring and drill a hole in the dash or use the cigar lighter hole. It would also require pulling the plug from the back of the switch and unhook the yellow wire from terminal 50 and reconnect it to the outlet side of the push button. Use a very big wire and tap onto terminal X and then connect to the inlet side of the switch. This way the key has to be on before the push button would work. If you tap to the circuit board or a kill switch that may not be the case. I would recommend trying it for a time or two before putting it all back in the dash to make sure there are no arcs and sparks. Good luck.

Bee Jay - Car looks great!
John - Great idea on wiring! Jeff (oredith)- does that mean that your start button does not need a key to be engaged? Has anyone actually installed one that needs the key and the button pressed to start? If so maybe a tech article would be good. Thanks for any more ideas. Nathan |

i think it's *harder* to install it so that no key is needed.. my wiring requires a key in the car, turned to the "on" position before the car will actually start.. the button is basically a short on the starter.. kinda the same idea as the relay, but required less wiring..

Thanks Nathan and ShawnO. The switch looks just like the one that comes in the Aston Martin Vanquish. I think the Viper has one too. I'm calling tommorow to order mine. Maybe I can have it in by Ventura this weekend. I intend to leave the key start hooked up, but have the push start button wired to the starter relay. I leave my top off almost 24/7 so I have to leave the key needed to operate. I will keep everyone posted.

Hey guys,
When I first saw the S2000 at the 2000 model year car shows, I ordered that part from Honda for my 912E. I was thinking the same thing; maintain the key use, just wire it into the starter circuit. I sent it back. The part is cheapo plastic and tacky when it's in your hand. If I could find a nice, polished alum and high-quality example I would do the job. But, the Honda part is pretty cheap. It might weigh three ounces. I'm not Honda bashing. I have a 94 DOHC del Sol that revs to 8300 RPM and I love it. But, the switch is not a quality part, IMHO. Regards, David |

My $0.02...
Your question is "How to wire it" My car came with a hot start relay (Pelican Kit). Why a hot start relay? The wiring takes a heavy and high wattage load to crank the car. The relay kit sends the juice directly to the relay and starter while the stock wiring is used to simply "click" the hot start relay into position. This will help to preserve your wiring AND you can use a switch that is not super heavy duty since only the relay will be "clicked." My car also came with a start button. The ignition must be turned on, but the start button prevents wear on the contacts that are in the bottom of the key (inside the steering column). My switch is wired into the steering column support bracket (a 1/2" hole) and it is out of sight. There are two heavy duty copper stranded wires that run from the push button switch under the side sill plate, through the sound padding, into the engine compartment, under the relay board, over hill, over dale, etc... and down to the starter. One wire on each post. This jumper method is almost identical to how a mechanic would use a hand-held hot start button while working on an engine. My Honda "Engine Start" button just arrived. I like it. Dave Cardone was right, it is made of chromed abs plastic, but I liked it. One problem. It came with no diagram or instructions. The back end is a plug recepticle for a plug with five pins. I have no idea Which is which. I assume two for the light and two for power to the starter relay. Does anybody have a S2000 or S2000 wiring diagram. I will have to figure it out, but it won't be in by Saturday. It is about 3 1/2" long by the way. I plan to install it in the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

BeeJay--two words for you: "Continuity Tester".
Clip one lead on to one of the inputs, clip the tester's lead to another input. Listen for a "beeeeeep". (Or look for the light, whatever.) Press the button in, listen for "beeeep". Repeat. There are only 10 possible combinations (4+3+2+1)--it won't take as long as posting your query here...
