v8 ford in a 914
Hey guys, I was wondering how hard it is to put a 302 in a porsche? I know of small block chevys being put in them. Does anybody know if a 302 will fit? thanks

It fits, somewhat. There is more massaging that has to be done to the engine compartment than with the SBC, due to the distributor location. There may be a couple of other issues as well; I remember there being reasons that Ford V8s were never swapped in (or just about never). The SBC is a very well-known swap; all of the issues have been discovered and solutions are only a few phone calls and a bunch of money away. (Or investigation and making your own solutions.)

cuz it's a Chevy Mark
![]() First off, the block is longer overall for a 302 v. SBC (2" longer IIRC). That said, for the Ford, you would need to figure out how to get the water in and out of the big arse timing chain cover assembly. Because the holes aren't round makes it tough. It could be easily done switching over to a belt drive like a Danny Bee which will have round inlet holes that would be easy to tap for fittings to attach water lines to. Distributor-wise, would need to go crank triggered and run a gutted dist housing just to drive the oil pump, or go external oil pump (which would take too much room on the front of the crank to install the drive components). I am full dry sump on mine now, so again a Ford would have been an easier choice had I known where I would end up. In any event, going to a Danny Bee and crank trigger ain't cheap and the Chebby is more of a slam dunk, so that is why it is so common. I did see a SBF in one at Otto's one time tho' and it had a stock distributor and so forth, but they allowed ingress into the interior compartment (boxed in the dist) and just didn't have a back pad IIRC.
