Grounding Strap and Weber Help

Hey folks I call upon your plethora of knowledge one more time! Where does the transmission grounding strap mount on the chasis itself? I have a '72 and know that the strap goes from the drivers side transmission mount but to where? Haynes does not show clearly. Also does anybody know how to identify Webers as to which type i have? I'd quess they are 40Idf but maybe 44's The PO installed them but they need a rebuild. Oh yeah one more thing has anybody encountered a probelm where one of their High beams doesn't work but it's not the bulb? I assume this probably has to do with the relay as the fuse is not bad. But i was wondering because the headlights have been upgraded to halogens and I read that I might need a high powered relay. Also where is that Relay? I know where the Auxilary Headlight relay is, I know where the headlight motor relays are but where is the regular Relay? As usual any and all help is greatly appreciated.

There is a stud welded on the under side of the rear trunk, just above where the ground strap attaches to the transmission.

Daris is right. The strap goes from one of the studs that holds the rear cover on the transmission, to a stud on the bottom of the trunk floor. Make sure both connections are clean and shiny.

Dunno about the Webers. My guess would be to either measure them (where?) or to search all over them for part numbers and then ask about the part numbers.

On the headlight, how do you know the bulb and the fuse are still good? In particular, the fuses can be bad while still *looking* fine. At the very least, rotate them in their clips to see if anything falls off/changes/etc.

I don't know if the 72s are the same, but I think the headlight relay on my 74 is in one of the sockets on top of the fuse box. Remove two screws and the fuse panel will come down and dangle by the wires. They may have swapped around the locations of which relay went where. Check the wire colors to tell what the relays control. Haynes (available from Pelican--plug, plug!) has B&W diagrams with labels for the colors, or Pelican has scans of the full-color diagrams.

The headlights are on separate circuits, with separate fuses. Be sure you check all grounds (brown wires). Many electrical problems on older cars revolve around grounds. Also, there are relays on the side of each headlight assy. Check for front end damage from a prior collision. If any, could lead you to the spot.

Hi there again. The Webers are usually marked. I wish that I could tell you where, but they are usually marked in a different spot on each set that I have seen. If you remove them, you should be able to see 40IDF, or 44IDF, etc... Once you see the marking, then it's pretty obvious.

If you drop the fuse panel to check the relay, >>>>DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST<<<<. The wires on the back of the fuse panel are held on with quick disconnect female connectors. From the factory they have a black "shrink wrap" cover, but that usally wears off. If you bump the wires into the mounting flange while lowering it, it could spark.

Behind each headlight, spot welded to the fender well are the grounds for the lights. Make sure they are good, especially if the car has been repainted, the cars I've seen usally have over-spray on these grounds.

Maybe the switch is bad, but if you get this far you should be using a test meter and not be swapping out components.

The PN on Webers (in my limited experience) is in very small letters on the base of the carb. They are hard enough to see, so clean the carb up good before looking. When you find them, post the numbers, I can look in my Weber/Zenith book and tell you what they are, and maybe even if they are aftermarket or originally came from a different car (like a MGB or something).

Thans for all the help guys!!! Weber help was very good they were 40's and headlight prooblem will have to be traced with a multi-meter.
