I was walking through my parking garage the other day and a very nice orange 914 caught my eye. When I pointed it out to my co-worker he mentioned that the guy has commuted it to work every day since he bought it in 1973. I commuted a 73 for a couple years back in 1987 and loved the car but never considered that anyone still put 10-15K on one of these every year.
Yes, I know it can be done but what I really wondered is how many of you guys still commute your 914? No flames please.... just curious |

I did it for close to a year, 120 miles a day. It needed the occasional fix here and there. Worst was having the shift coupler break on the freeway, then having to duct tape the whole assembly together for a couple of gears to work.

I have in the past, and I will again in the future. When is a very good question.... I do drive it to work every once in a while right now, though.

340K and counting
My 914 is my daily back-n-forth to work car. Unless there is rain in the forecast! Then it stays in the garage.
I have averaged almost 10K miles/year since I bought it in 1985. I estimate the chassis has ~340K miles on it now. I'm not driving it this week because I am waiting for a new headlight relay from PP.

Betty (my wife) drives her 74 1.8L 914 to work every day, and almost every day since she has owned it. She bought it 23 years ago........
I would drive mine every day, but in Texas with no AC it is not practical in mid summer. As soon as I finish the AC, I will drive it every day. Like my signature says... It is better to wear out than to rust out!

Until last year when I got a BMW e30 for bad weatrher, my 73 was an EVERY day DD, rain, snow, hail, 24/7/365. OK, I do have an old PU truck, and drove it during the last engine pull, but that was only a couple of weeks.
I put about 9K a year on the car, and have since 1989. |
