V8 Q: Frame Reinforcements

Yes, I'm aware of the stiffening kit sold by Pelican, and I've heard of others with similar, if not the same, kit for sale. But for a strong V8, I think these kits are really not enough. What have other people done to make the frame even stronger?

One solution is shown at http://fly.hiwaay.net/~jonlowe/MVC010S.JPG -- any other ideas or experiences?

It depends where you live, but try going to some SCCA, GT2, GT1, races. Look for a car that seems well done then ask who the fabricator is.

If you're in Florida there are two places, Auto Sports South (use a search engine or go to the Back alley links page) or Black Forest Racing. They both do 914 frame stuff, and at least Auto Sports South has racing experience.

Also check out "Grassroots Motorsports" magazine, they MAY have some adds for fabricators in the classified ads.

Sorry I can't be more help, but maybe find out what other racing classes allow tube frame reinforcements and check those out.

Jim. I looked at the tube frame picture you referred. I join the those who suggest you first determine your desired application and then build toward that goal. The stiffening kit is shipped as 22 gauge (i think) flat metal with holes to weld on. Installation, if correct as in the early GT 6 racers, is tedious, complex, time consuming,(allow a day to get over and around the wheel housing shown in the referenced pic)and requires a roll over device or rotisserie. The V8 will go fast in a straight line but upset all the handling characteristics. You hardly need a stilffening kit if you go with a tube frame. Then, its hard to fashion just a partial tube frame without leaving a weak link somewhere else. On the other hand there are roll bar installations that tie in above the center console, at the targa seat belt fitting, and then to the frame that will solve modest center frame flex. I have comments on all your various V8 posts but would prefer to address them by e-mail, if available.
