Post Engine Case Number

I searched the archives to no avail... I have a 1.8L completely apart and am trying to decide if I should use this case as the best candidate (balance of cost ($0) and longevity (???))for a 2.0L. The number is EC040586. It has a WA stamped on the extended top flat surface. Anyone know anything about these numbers?
Also, from reading the past posts I also think the 1.8L heads are the way to go for porting/polishing and bigger valves. Any opinions.
Thanks in advance!!!
JB

acording to the haynes the EC040586 (engine #) has a 7.3:1 compression while if it started with a AN it would be an 8.6:1 compression and the horsepower is rated 76@4800 for the EC.

The AN engines were not available in US-spec 914s, just European ones.

The EC case is a fine starting point for a 914 engine, and the 1.8 heads are very good places to start as well.

"Go for it."
