new rims
How different are the stock 914-4 rims vs. a vw beetle. I was offered a set of aluminum rims from a beetle and the guy claims they will bolt right on.

The bolt pattern is right. The centerbore may be right. The offset is not. They'll stick out further than regular 914 wheels will, and you will probably not be able to fit 205s on them under stock fenders. You may only be able to fit 165s, and it can be tough to find decently fun tires in 165SR15...

They are NOT the same. As Dave said, the offset will be different.

I knew it was too good to be true. I have stock rims and no flares on the car. I know all about trying to find 165s. To get 205s, what size rims do I need?

On most 914s--but not all--you can fit 205s on stock wheels under the stock fenders. Some 914s will rub on one rear fender or the other, though. Sometimes squashing the fender lip flat will provide enough clearance, sometimes you have to pull the fender out a little.

I put 195 60 15s on my 73 1.7 with no flares, and on EMPI wheels that had the original sized tires.
The fit is perfect on the drivers side, but too tight on the pass side. Should I try to crimp the lip on that fender or adjust something else? I was told the big long bolt that goes through the trailing arm front "ear" can be adjusted but it does not seem to have loosened at all on its own. I hear they do that commonly.

You can't move the whole trailing arm in or out. You have to move the fender. Fold up the lip, or pull out the fender. Either or both may be required.
