barn find 74 914(track car to be)
Ifound a 1974 porsche 914 for sale on the local craigslist and decided to go look at it because we have been looking for one to turn into a track car. we went to look at it and it was nearly rust free for a northeastern 914 the shock towers/ battery box/ floor pans are solid!! The previous owner had no title or keys because he is a cop and he got it from a cleanup of abandoned property. He had no idea if the engine ran or not but from the looks of it it verywell may fire right up( the heat exchangers are not rusted/ no mice nests etc) It has the optional 3 gauge center console, the interior and t top are in great condition except for 2 tears in thedriver seat. it has all around disc brakes, side shifter transmission, riviera wheels. so we picked it up for $600.
pictures are here http://s542.photobucket.com/albums/gg439/hellion_02/porsche%20914%20track%20car/ does anyone know how to decode a vin number?

914 vins are pretty simple.. Yours should start out "474xxxxxxx" which would tell you its a "4" cylinder from 1974. Not much else to decipher besides production number. No fancy codes for options for instance.

47 == four-cylinder 914
4 == 1974 model year 29 == Karmann factory XXXXXX == series number within the model year ...And that's all the VIN can tell you. Other stickers ("Karmann" sticker on the door jamb, emissions compliance sticker in the engine bay) can tell you more information. --DD

With the center gauge options it should be a 2 liter but, that's not a given.
Easy way to tell is to look for a square-ish air box with some ribs on top and a slight triangulated piece leading toward the intake. Nice find.
