I got some used chrome bumpers for my '74 (yeah!) but after cleaning them up, and putting the new rubber tops on, I found the threaded holes or nuts that are welded to the back are completely stripped and won't hold the bolt. I guess I will be taking them to a machine shop to weld a nut on, or to thread what is left.
Unless anyone has a better idea? I am open to suggestions.

Hello
Helicoils ? Icky corner to weld. best is drill out the restnut and place a new stainless steel nut on that place and hard solder it. If everything brakes you can place a nut via the open horn grille. Grüsse |

I ended up drilling out the rusted out holes, welding two nuts to a 1" x 5" plate, and placing that behind the bumper mount. No need to actually fasten it to the bumper, since I will use duct tape to hold th edog bones in place while I mount the bumper anyway.

rivet nutter
We work on Porsches here at OTTOS and have been using a rivet-nutter for making or replacing captivated nuts. They come in sizes from 3mm to 14mm. It is just like a rivet, except it is threaded on the inside. If I ever figure out how to use a digital camera and down load it on the web, you will see it at this site. Like when we do the fuel pump relocate, we drill two holes on the front firewall and use the rivet-nutter to make capitaved threads that we can mount the fuel pump mount to. OTTO
