916 Transmision

Has anyone had any experience with a modified 915 transmission in their 914? I've been interested in the vellios kit, but have not heard from anyone who has actually been using it.

Ive been doing some homework on the 915 transmition for my V-8 conversion. You should talk to renegade with regards to theyre converstion kits. Even thought the transmition is intended for use with a V-8, its still attached to a 914. They have all the appropriate hardware to fit the 915 transmition to a 914, all the information you could want, and their price is pretty good to. If youre still not satisfied talk to Rennsport. http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ http://www.rennsportsystems.com/~porsche/ (respectivly)
The 915 will have rpm's vs speed similar to that of the 901 with the 7:31 ring and pinion. You can however get both 8:31 and 6:31 depending, although i would not recommend the 6:31 unless you intend to run 250 ft*lbs torque.

I only have experience with a single 914 that used a 915 transmission. That was two autocross runs in Tobias Olney's impressive 993-powered Six.

The car does not have the Vellios kit on it. I'm not sure the Vellios 916 kit actually makes the tranny into a side-shifter, but that would probably be a good thing if it does.

Tobias' car is definitely a tailshifter, and drove like one. The linkage felt just a little worse than a tailshifter in good shape. I only blew one shift in two autocross runs, so it couldn't be *that* awful, right?

The linkage appeared to be home-fabricated, using things like spherical rod ends, brackets used as pivot points, etc.

As I said, it's only one car, and I only drove it twice. Hope it was of some help.

Oh, and as a contrast, I have another friend who is putting "something over 300 HP" (he's now pretty cagey about exact numbers) through a 901 sideshifter in his 914-6. He has an external tranny cooler w/electric pump. He does go through pinion gears every couple of years, and he probably freshens up the tranny every year. But this is something over 250 ft-lbs of torque on a car that runs Big Track events just about every weekend--and he is *not* kind to the machinery...
