Sounds like a linkage alignment issue. All those crappy bushings do wear out. Its been too long since I adjusted the linkage, but I recall adjustments available at both the gearshift inside and at the transmission. Sounds like you are having trouble aligning it.

Check the 914 Shifting Improvements tech article available on this very site. You can go back to the main Pelican Parts page, look on the left side for 914, then under that Tech Articles. The page that takes you to has lots of good info, including an article with pictures on how to replace the shift bushings and how to adjust the linkage.

One easy and quick way to check for alignment of the shifting linkage is to access
the inspection plate between the seats just at the firewall. There you will see a linkage adjuster. Loosen the nut just slightly so there is play.Place the shifter in first.(Now I haven't drove my 914 for years as I'm restoring it but) the shifter is pulled all the way to the rear in the first gate, then tighten the nut. If you still don't have gears its time to replace the bushings at three critical locations. |

My shifting deteriorated in 1 hour. Turns out the shifting bar joint bushing fell to pieces. (This is the joint that the shaft through the firewall attaches to.) PP did offer at one time but NLA so I made a set from bronze on my lathe/mill so these should never die.
