Tire fitment question
Hey guys, I have a set of four 15x7 Revolution wheels that are the same size/offset as the 911R rear wheel. Has anyone ever tried to see what size tires can be fitted to the rear of a non-flared 914 using such wheels?
When I bought the car, it had standard (i.e. non-R) 15x7 Fuchs on it with 195/60 Yoko AVS's, and with slightly rolled rear lips they fit okay. Thanks. David

Depending on the offset you can run 225 size 15 inch diameter tires. This is what many of the vintage racers use but it is tight and they generally roll the fender lip so no grabbing will occur. They run these both front and rear.

I see. Thanks. Worth a shot. General rule is that no need to stagger tire sizes?

No need to stagger tire sizes. The 914 is well balanced enough that it doesn't need that particular band-aid.
Note that the rear fenders of 914s are not all the same!! I know of one 914 that ran real 911R wheels, and it could only fit a 195-width tire under one rear fender. Most 914s are safe with 205s, and some can run wider, as John has shown. Be ready to pull the fender out slightly, but you may not have to. --DD

One final note about fitting tires as Dave noted, they might have different size room to fit into and it might be due to the bodies being built by VW or just plain slop in how things went together. I have seen many 914s with different fender/wheel clearance both front and rear between sides and there had never been a wreck!

Yup.. bodies can be all over the place. My '76 with 5.5 fuchs and 205s had plenty of room to run wider tires. My '70, with 205s was snug as can be.
Also not, not all 225s are the same width. A Hoosier might run wider than, say, a Continental. When I tried running real 911R's on the back of my '70, I needed to run about 3/4" spacer to make it fit (offset difference between the "R"s 49mm and my other wheels 23mm. Rolling fender lips was needed too. Others need to pull them out a little bit. Ride height and camber settings will also impact fitment. Depending on what you have for power, a 205 might be a wide enough tire. That's nearly 8.5" or rubber. These cars came with 155-165 width tires originally afterall ![]()
