I need help with year id - race car
Hello - I have a new (to me) 914 race car that was made from at least 3 parts cars - and Now I am trying to buy parts and need help..... The body - no a- pillars no windshield ---- front pass fender has a welded plate for the cage over the vin --- no bumpers and holes drilled all over the front area --- I destroyed a firewall shift bushing that I bought (did the hot water and all) and now I think it could be for the wrong car year.
-- How to ID the body year ???? pass side floor has seat hinges , if that helps. I also need help with front end id, how to tell if the front susp is early or late ??? and calipers ??? ------ the rear trailing arms, how to Id early from late --- I have the calipers off the car -- I got 4 trailing arms and 2 complete front susp -- with the car , but need to id them to buy spare parts.... is there a good place to see pixs??? I have searched sites and googled but never come up with what I need -----

Your best bet might be to but one of the restorers guide books. Not only are they a great read but they define all changes large and small by year. That would help you by noting the installed features.

Here's the Brett Johnson book from the Pelican catalog:
Porsche 914 Books & Technical Documentation - Page 1 Note that his book does not call out the measurements of the different parts; it just says that the parts are different. The best way I know to be able to take the measurements is to have an example to measure. I'm guessing you do not have one available at this point, so asking here is a reasonable way to start. I would suggest, if you haven't done this already, to ask the same question over at the 914world BBS. --DD

so, tell us what the shift bushing hole size is - they are quite different for the early tailshift vs late sideshift - that will tell us what body shell you have
or just order yourself one of each & you will know which you have

Thanks to all for info -is the early bushing smaller outside dia ??? the one I have is too big for the hole ------ I heated it in water and cut some "V" shapes in the outside ring , but destroyed it trying to get it in the hole
I found the last owner of the race car - He filled in some of the blanks for me - the body is a 1976 ---- I have not had a 914 that late before --- this is my 8th 914 (all rusty southeast cars) but my 1st non-street car ... thanks again ----
