Back-up switch problem

Hey all,

How does the back-up switch actuating pin or plunger fitted into the tranny? Does it screw in, or just pop in & out? Mine has a tendency to stick out and not return to normal, causing the reverse lights to stay on all the time. I think I need to remove the plunger & examine/replace it.

well after you unscrew the switch it should just pull out but there has to be a seal there that maybe swollen and causing it to stick

i dont know for sure but when i changed my switch it did not leak and i would figure that it would with no seal

try calling PP and see if they can check a seal kit to see if there is a seal and maybe beg to see if they can send you one, they should but they might have to order it seperately

Thanks for the link. It's #13, the contact plunger, that I'm referring to. The switch itself screws in & out w/no problem. I'm just not sure how to remove the plunger.

That plunger (part #13) should simply pull out.

Sometimes they wear out and become to short thus no back up lights. Simply replace it with the same diameter drill bit.

However, I am not sure why the pin is not going back in. Could the return spring inside of the switch be going bad??

Brand new switch from PP. The plunger has some in-out play, but doesn't want to come out completely. Gets stuck. Seems like the end that contacts the cam is bent, flared or something like that.

Does the fitting that it slides into come out as well? (Preferably from the outside. I don't want to pull & disassemble my tranny for reverse lights.)

While on this subject. I need one of those plungers. I think mine has worn over time.

The back-up light switch pin is part # 901 303 017 01. Available everywhere form the people in the know. To check the back-up light circuit, take the two wires that are in the back-up light switch on the transmissions left side and with the key on, touch the two wires together. If you have back-up lights than the circuit is good. If you do not have back up lights, check the light bulbs for the back-up lights. If you do have the lights, you should take the switch in hand and get an ohm meter and check if the switch has continuity when you stick a nail or something in the hole to simulate the back-up light pin. If you have continuity then replace the pin. It is very visible when the back-up light pin is worn, it will have a flat spot on the end that belongs in the trans. OTTO
