3.0 Install

Question,
I have a project and the car has a 1.7 engine. Is it very diffulcult to change it to a 3.0 Sc motor and are the costs alot more than just the replacement motor?
I am new to the 814 world. I have (2) 911's and started playing with the 914 fully gutted and started the restro process?
Please advise? I don't think a 1.7 will satisfy my need for speed??

The 3.0 swap is a very common swap into 4 cylinder cars. Check PatrickMotorsports.com for parts you will need. Also 914World.com is a terrific site for 914 specific information with a lot of people who know what to do and how to do it. Good luck.

Depending how much work you can do by yourself, it can be cheap or super expensive. You need a new motor mount, oil tank, lines, an engine.. you likely want to upgrade factory fuel lines, will it be injected or carbed? you will have some wiring to do, need a new tach.. then you will need to address brakes and suspension as the heavier more powerful motor will tax the regular 1.7 components. While not needed, larger tires come into play to get the additional hp to the ground, which then also leads to flares and body stiffenening kits..

As you can see.. there are lots of things to consider when doing this type of upgrade.

Depending how you use the car, sometimes a simpler (but not always cheaper) improvement is a big 4 instead. My 120hp 2.1l 914 was a blast and kept up with 200hp 911s (in part because it weighed sub 2000 lbs.) A 140-160hp "big 4" can be quite entertaining and cuts some costs of the conversion parts (engine mount, oil tank for instance)

The Six conversion is well-understood; it has been done a whole lot of times before. We carry conversion parts, and naturally we would prefer you buy them from us rather than our competition...

If you don't fabricate almost everything yourself, it will cost a lot more than just the cost of the engine. It isn't that hard to spend $10K on conversion bits, if you have pretty specific definitions of "doing it right". Engine tin, motor mount setup, throttle linkage, exhaust (heat exchangers are $$$$, headers are less so), oil tank, oil lines, possibly oil cooler... It can add up in a hurry.

If you can fabricate things yourself, you can build most of the above stuff for the cost of materials, and of course your time for doing the fabrication.

If you're paying someone else to do all the work, it will cost a whole lot more. I don't know how many hours would go into a conversion, but it's not just two or three.

A hotted-up four-cylinder can be quite enjoyable. You can get ~120 HP ones for on the order of $5K, and they will mostly bolt in.

Thanks

Thanks for the information. You are probably right on the built 4 cyl. I really want to get some HP but at the same time don't want to spend tons of money on this one car.
I do most if not everything on my restro cars but have not played with the 914 and conversions.
THanks

+1 on Dave. I am in the midst of having one of these conversions done with a freshly rebuilt 3.0 and the money is getting insane. Go with a big 4 and bank the rest.
