Change all the rubber hoses and fuel filter first. Be careful with the injectors. They have a crimped factory hose on them. The cloth hose may be brittle and dry. Make sure you change the fluids and have a fire extinguisher on hand. And, from the picture. Add a coil wire.

Did the family that you bought the car from know when it ran most recently? Is the picture of the engine compartment as you received it, or did you remove the air cleaner and unplug things? If it were mine I would not be afraid to reassemble it and test run it to determine the condition of the engine. As has alread been said, after replacing the old fuel and filter, I would open the fuel return line and run the fuel pump until you get fresh fuel into your catch container. Reconnect it and see if it will start with a buddy watching, fire extinquisher in hand, for fuel leaks. If it has only been 6 to 9 months since it ran I wouldn't even change the fuel and filter. Bear in mind that, only a fool would take a car of that vinage as nice as yours out for a drive without changing every hose that sees fuel pressure unless you are a fan of $3000 "CARBECUES"!!! Leon

I agree!
914 fires are not to be under estimated. When I bought my fourth 914 from CA, I towed it back to Phoenix - and it was a 74 daily driver. On the way back someone was forcing an older 72 back to TX. After stopping to help him with an oil leak, he pressed on only to wind up 2 hours ahead on the side of the road with engine bay in flames and a gracious trucker with fire-extinguisher in hand. Rubber ages whether it sees daylight or not. Be safe and enjoy that new toy.

thanks guys. The motor is as i bought it. The owner changed evrything and rebuilt the engine completely. He was very close to running it when he passed. I am going to completely drain the gas tank because the fuel smells really old. definate fire extiguisher on hand. Should i stay with the fuel injection or go with dual webbers?

We can only assume that since he rebuilt it and reinstalled FI parts that it has a FI cam in it. There is your answer unless you want to take it back apart .

Depends on what you want. If you want good drivability, good mileage, better value - keep FI. Otherwise go carbs. My .02 cents.
