Fuel pump problems?

I just bought my first 914, a 76 2.0 recently and I just got it running. It needs a definite tune up, but I I'm concerned about the fuel pump because when I turn on the key but don't start the engine up, the fuel pump continues to run even after the 1.5 seconds pressure build up I'm used to on fuel injected cars. Is this normal for the 914 or is something awry?

Someone has jumped the relay or wired the pump directly to switched power. Not the way it is supposed to be.

The pressure regulator does not control the fuel pump. The ECU (the "brain") is supposed to, by grounding a wire that connects to one pin on the fuel pump relay. Someone has most likely re-wired the pump so it is always on when the key is on; one popular way to do this is to power it from the coil (+) connection. Look for an extra wire plugged in there.

If you have carbs, it will continue to run as long as the ignition is on; at least that is the way mine is wired. If you have stock Fuel Injection, the above comments are correct.

Yep the fuel pump was rewired to the coil. Looks like the bottom of the relay board had cracked and the relays weren't working right. Thankfully I had a good spare. Thanks for the help Now I just gotta try to change it back to the original config. Wish me luck!

AA sells rebuilt relay boards (not cheap, iirc, around $200 with core charge). I had to replace mine on my '76 a few years ago.
