Carb conversion From F.I.
I recently removed the F.I. from my 73 1.7..( I spent over 400 dollars trying to fix the poor running system..replacing everything but the engine..) it ran great for eight years driven only about 100 miles a year..never raced...well once in a while around corners to shut up the rice burners that were on my ass...LOL.... anyway I put on rebuilt Dellorto 40's..another new fuel pump, more new fuel line, relocating the fuel pump again..new filter..took out the tank for the fourth time to get things right..( replaced the master cyl too)..used all new and clean materials..took my time..and reused the vac advance F.I. dist...after tuning ,adj, and filling her with new 91 octane She runs ok when warm but has some minor flat spots at low RPM ( 1000 to 3000)..after that she screams and those carbs really growl !! and give the jump and sound she was meant to have .... even with a 1.7 !!...I was told that with a conversion to carbs from F.I.. the cam used is taylored for F.I alone....!! and one will lose top end and bottom end performance...I've spoken to ten people that were leaning toward this theory..WELL>>>>> I found that to be FALSE in my situation !!the car pulls and runs better now.. yet still purrs in fourth and fifth !! I still have to put in a 009 dist for my bottom end flat spots...but other then that.. it went well...

Just my two cents, but do NOT use an 009 with a Type 4. The engine will run way hot and the advance curve will be way off.
I'd use the Mallory that Jake Raby sells. The 009 works somewhat well on Type 1's. But on a Type 4? You're better off using the stock one. |

If that's the case, your FI was never set up correctly.
![]() A stock FI with a stock cam in good working order will always produce the same (or more) power than a set of carbs with the stock FI cam. Either way, it's working better now for you, so that should be all that matters ... ![]()

Jared- I checked with Jake and he stopped selling the Mallory in 2008. My engine has a 009 with carbs and it does seem to run hot...235F-245F on 90F+ days with the stock cooling system and webers. Any other ideas/comments/sources for a better distributor?

Use the stock distributor from a 1.8L 914.
235-245F is WAY too hot. |

Thanks for the advice!!..( prior to the conversion the car ran like a smooth piece of glass....and had great power...then it slowly started to run rougher and rougher..to the point of a constant sputter and backfire..) now with carbs ..it runs better and has a nice growl when under load. If the 009 is going to cause the motor to run too hot..how will the 1.8 dizzy differ from my 1.7 stock dizzy?.. I have some flat spots from 1000 to 3000 rpm..using the stock dizzy....I did notice the engine runs cooler with 91 octane.. or does anyone know the best dizzy for my set up?( stock 1.7 )..

Check with Air Cooled Network. I just ordered their SVDA with Pertronix. I will let you know how it works in a week or so.
