For sale NO WAY!
While my car was at the shop it got alot of attention. My wrench guy said people had been stoppong to look at it all day. He had 3
people offer to buy it outright. I think one was probably legitamate. I was alittle surprised by this. Anyone have an experience like this. The guy pretty interested offered $6000 as is. It still isn't running quite right. I've been working on this car for 9 months & can finally drive it again. I told him it would probably take $10,000 to get it out of me. He didn't laugh in my face but almost looked like he was considering it. I'm thinking the guy must be nuts! What do you think?

Yep, often get sticky notes on the windshield with phone numbers asking if I might be selling anytime soon. I DO keep them, just in case. Most of the time its the usual "Had-one/friend-had-one/drove-one in college" notes, or like once it said "THANKS FOR THE WOODIE!"
While getting a front-end alignment, a gentlemen walked over and was ready to write me a check for $5K on-the-spot. I chuckled and asked him "You ... know anything about 914's?" "Nope." he said, "But if it'll keep me in the garage and away from the Old Rag, it'll be worth every penny!" Came THIS close ... ![]()

I was at a BMW dealership picking up some parts in my old BMW around 10 years ago, and a couple came up to me and said "We've been looking for a car just like that for our daughter! Are you interested in selling?"
I wasn't looking to sell the car, but said "I suppose if you made me an offer I could not refuse, it could be for sale!" They made me that offer and it was gone by nightfall. |

When I put my car up for sale a couple months ago, my wife "dared" me to put a For-Sale sign on it and park it out front. (The car got a lot of attention even w/o a sign.) I resisted cuz I already had internet ads up and had a few serious lookers.
One Saturday she put a sign on the car. Before she even got back inside the house, somebody stopped. Turned out the guy was a major Porsche fan and owned a 911 3.0 or 3.2 and like many of the older guys, said he fondly remembered the 914 when they were new. Even when it wasn't for sale, I got quite a few notes left on the windshield or even guys yelling out on the freeway asking about buying the car. Nice ones are not very common and they definitely DO get noticed.

I don't drive a 914, but I like them, I wanted one, so I'll chime in.
I usually wash my car in front of my dad's warehouse, which is down the street from Disney Imagineering and Dreamworks, so there are usually a fair amount of 911s, 993s, 996s, and Boxsters driving by. Once in a while, they will ask from their cars (usually stopped in a line for the red light) and ask if its for sale. Or they stop and ask. I always say no, I don't think I could ever sell it, but its nice to get noticed. Hey Chris, have you decided yet on a "flavor" for your soon to be 914-6? I assume you plan on racing with POC. I was a big fan of Ravenna, even had my dad looking at the ad online. "I would, I would...but your mother would kill me."

A man with time on his hands could make some extra cash picking up 914's in CA and bringing them East. 3 weeks now in New Orleans, I have had my 914 out of the garage twice, and received 3 offers over $5k. One guy did an illegal U-turn and followed me for 5 miles just to look at it when I stopped for coffee.
I would guess your locale is similiar. The high concentration of them in Central and Southern CA, meant I bought mine cheap. If I hadn't spent so much on nit-picky stuff, like throwing away perfectly good stock exhaust so I could put on SS exchangers and Bursch, I could sell it for a good profit here. Maybe I can start retailing them here. The closest to me is some place in Atlanta. (ick)

Randy, you may be on to something. When I went shopping for my teener 2 years ago, I travelled all over Southern New England looking at peoples' ideas of "rust free". I wanted to puke.
Then along comes some guy in the area who advertised a teener as "the cleanest 914 in the east" (or something like that), but at an exorbitant price. It was indeed a clean, transplanted CA car, and after I talked him down a bit, I bought it, and the rest, as they say, is history. Of course, a lot of those weenies interested in buying our spiffed up teeners don't understand that owning a teener is a *commitment*, not to be confused with writing a check for that showroom queen with the 100,000 mile warranty. More like "100 miles or until you get it home, whichever occurs first"...

When I take it out, ( 10 times yearly maybe ) sometimes two or three times a day. When I tell them my break even point for the car is close to 20,000 they don't even ask about the price.

About twenty years ago in my area (Pittsburgh), there was a gentleman who did a very brisk business of buying local 914s, shipping them to California(LA), and turning a nice profit. The irony of it all could be an East coaster buying a 914 that was originlly sold new on the east coast.

I know Mike, and others, have experience doing that. But they sell them and then ship them, right? That caters more to the guy who KNOWS he WANTS a 914.
I think there is money to be made in bringing them here and putting them on a boutique lot. That appeals to the customer who doesn't know the 914, but sees a cool little Porsche for under $10k, and says, "Wow, I didn't know I could afford that!" I have already contacted a boutique lot here in Louisiana. We may have to try this.

If anyone has a real nice factory 914-6 anywhere in the US for sale, send the info my way. I'm waiting for Mike Z's reply to the e-mail I sent him last week abut this subject (thanks for sending him my e-mail addy Dave). I'm on the eastcoast too. This week I'm taking a 6 out for a drive that was shipped from Cali a few years ago. Seems like the place to get "rustfree" ones.
So how about it? Anyone want to sell their factory build 914-6 to a good home? Thanks! P.S. If I do get a car from the left coast, Can anyone recommend a good shipping company? |

Others may have a diferent experience but, MY experience in shipping is, stay away from Dependable Auto Shipers, also known as DAS.
They just shipped 2 cars from CA to LA for me. Damaged both. My 914, they broke the front spoiler and delivered it covered in mud. Someone was obviously driving it around a muddy lot quite a bit. My brand new Ford Taurus they chained down using the rear trailing arm, bending it so that the rear wheel was toed out 30 degrees and they didn't even notice. Now I have to get 2 repair estimates, take photos and crap to get them to pay for it. I won't use them again.

I stopped at a used car lot in Rowley (north of Boston) when I noticed a white 914 2.0. Checked the engine bay and found - NO RUST DAMAGE. The lot owner had trailered it from Carolina; it was gone within the week. Made me wish I'd seen that one first.
Not many rust free ones in New England. Bob G |

Aaron -
Those two trips to N.H. and the time spent locating a low rust 914 will pay dividends later. As D.D. and nearly all the senior members of this board will tell you, the most expensive thing to fix on these cars is the rust, especially structural problems. Nice pick-up. Wish I'd found that N.H. hill before you did. And, not to worry, you'll have plenty of time to rebuild it later. Bob G. |
