916

What were the differences between a 914-6 and the 916 ?
I know the 916 has a complete roof but are there more differences ?
Has somebody built a weldable rooftop to mimic a 916 ?
I think a complete roof would make a stiffer chassis.

The 916 as you know is a prototype. George hussey of automobile alanta iin
Marietta Georgia has one. He wrote about it,the differences are many.

There are one or two people who have made steel roof panels after the fiberglass panel and welded them on. One guy made a roof panel out of a 944 roof section, so it had the sunroof built in. Neat looking car. Having a complete roof does make for a stiffer chassis.

The 916 had fender flares and the fiberglass 916 front and rear bumpers as well as the steel roof. They used either 2.4 S-spec 911 engines, or 2.7 RS-spec ones. All used a version of the 915 transmission (from the 72-86 911) converted to side-shift. I do not remember which brakes they used; I am guessing they were the aluminum "S" brakes but that really is a guess. The interiors were mostly standard 914 but generally in leather and cloth rather than vinyl.

At least one had air conditioning fitted; the firewall behind the driver's seat was modified to make room for the compressor.

iirc, 6x15 front and 7x15 rear fuchs with 185/70 front and 215/60 rear tires. yes, aluminum "S" calipers up front. I *think* they also ran thin spacers to widen the track and fill out the flares a bit better than it would ahve been otherwise.

6 and 7 ? I think those are too narrow for those flares.
Thanks for your answers.

in fact, the 916 originally had 185/70 15 on 7x15 Fuchs all around
spacers on all wheels

Indeed Gustl.. my mistake.. confused the '73 RS base tire package with the 916. Telling of the times that a 185 was still considered "wide" and a 215 was "really wide" back then

I do think the car looks amazing with wider rubber like this Euro 916 is shown.

Porsche Crest 916 versions

the porsche engine in 1972 was a 2.4 - with versions for TES & RS

car at this link below was built at the factory on a fresh body shell by Wolfgang Dworazik, over the winter of '71-'72, an insider with access to the prototype parts bin

larrym's Garage :: Sixer

it was originally built with a 2.4RS engine and still has the dual ignition wiring and CD boxes in it, and it had dual low-pressure rotary fuel pumps

an interesting variation here is that it has a removable top that is smooth fiberglass, about 1.5mm thicker than a std 914 top, weighs about 9 lbs more and has aluminum reinforcement bars embedded all around the perimeter - probably a prototype that was "discarded" in favor of the eventual steel top

the front & rear "bumpers" are hand-laid fiberglass, and fairly thick; no chopper gun molds involved; also note the flared steel rocker panels that match the fender flares

anyone who wants to come to inspect the car for ideas and details is welcome to do so - it's stored in the Sacramento area
