Hey Armando,

What I never understood was why Porsche never installed them on the same centerline as that of the seats. I had planned to install a set of reproduction harness mounts into my 914-6 and I spent a fair amount of time deciding where to mount them. I also had a set of seats made that mounted abour an inch closer to the centerline of the car. It's a pain in the butt to get it all figured out but you can have something that works better, if you want to sacrifice a tiny bit of originality.

Cheers,
JR

You are right about that, it's a constant struggle deciding between how it was done and how it is best done. I vividly recall the many times I had to convince Spraker of not making it look so pretty while trying to dial-back the workmanship quality in many areas.

Even today, deciding the paint quality level and expense, which I'm told could cost upwards of 20k dollar, I have to keep saying to myself; "this is a race car, not a concourse queen"... ;)

Yes, and I posted lots of photos to illustrate exactly that. The reinforcement shoulder-belt brackets are welded to the firewall on the engine bay side, so had I painted my chassis and then welded the brackets that would have certainly damaged the expensive paint job.

I don't understand why you asked that question...

I guess I just mis-read or misunderstood your post:

"Had I painted the chassis, I would have to weld the four steel backing reinforcement plates to the engine side of the firewall."

It almost sounds as if you were saying that otherwise you planed on welding the backing plates to the interior side of the firewall. My bad.:)

Well, it was was a bit confusing the way I worded it. I changed that sentence to read as follows;

"Had I opted to paint the chassis prior to finding the OEM GT reinforcement plates, that would have been a disaster, probably costing me a whole lot more money by welding them in place and then having to repaint that entire area..."

Thx! :D

great thread and thanks for the video Armando................I recently purchased my 1st 914, with the intent of making a 914/6-GT clone....but the 914 I ended up with may be too nice to change.....so i'm slowly looking for a 914 roller to get back on track with the project.
regards,
Al

Congratulation on the 914 purchase. Yes, don't do what I did, I purchased one that was in very nice shape and strip it down to nothing, then started on the GT conversion. Might as well start with a roller-type and do what you want.

BTW, I have a roller for sale, but it's not a factory six, a very clean and rust-free chassis from a 1972 1.7L. Here are the photos.

Note: The above photo is not up to date, the chassis comes with 7" and 8" factory Fuchs. The two pairs of 7x15 and 8x15 Aluminum Centerline wheels are being offer separateely

It is not my intention of placing a FS ad here and just pointing out the car is available here. If anyone is interested, I can be reached at AJSERRANO at MSN dot COM. No 'pm' please, already managing way too many email accounts as it is.

Amazing build by the way ,pbase takes up more time than I would like;).
Hope you don't mind me asking but were the twin CDI's mounted away from the engine compartment for any reason? was the original 914/6 CDI unit mounted off the battery mount or otherwise, thanks.

Armando, what an amazing build as I went through all of the pages, info and pics! Any updates?

ajserrano 09-16-2014 07:27 PM

Hi Drew, well, yes and no... No progress on the car, but I'm now in the process of building the 906 motor. Restored the 906 Center Lube Mag Housings, the small 226mm Fan Housing and a few other parts, see below, 'before and after'...

Armando has been building this car since I first met him in the early 80's.
Amazing project that needs to be finished. Maybe he did and is enjoying the shyt out of it......that would be my hope.
