The Last New 914-6 GT Project

Many of you are already all too familiar with my 914-6 GT project and website 914-6 GT's Photo Galleries at pbase.com, but I'm often asked where exactly I stand with the project.

Since I always thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about the transformation, I will now try and document in some form of sequential fashion the many modifications and changes we have completed over time. With that goal in mind, I will begin from the time I found and purchased the factory 914-6 and continue the thread until its completion.

Please note that it will be a challenge for me to find the necessary time required to post all the photos and comments and I may not be able to swiftly reply to most questions, but I'll do my best. For now, I hope that you'll enjoy this 914-6 GT build thread. Below I posted some nice photos showing the condition of the car when I purchased the factory 1970 Porsche 914-6 in August of 2002. It is chassis 914.043.1722 and a very sound and clean sample as we can see.

This 914-6 was entered in the Official 914 Registry by Steven Lutz in 1997...

After completing the purchase, I took the 914-6 on a two-hour joy ride around Palos Verdes Estates and then drove it
directly to Euro-Tek, Mark Spraker's shop in Costa Mesa. I parked the car and it was the last time I drove it.
I just can't quite put my finger on it, but I love the stance and this simple photo...

Totally loving this thread and photos of the build. Please keep this level of documentation up so that it keeps me thinking and spending money on my car. ;)

I saw that you widened the rear flares,are these the same width as the ones on the back of the Sonauto car?

Wider Rear Flares, Sonauto #121...

Hi John, yes, funny you noticed. I have yet to find time to add and sprinkle my comments and notes, maybe a bit later this week.

By the way, since my GT project is NOT a factory built GT with race history, early on, I decided to pick and choose the most notable features of ALL legitimate 914-6 GT race cars in existence and incorporate those key features in my GT build. With this goal in mind, I'm sure the project will be not only be very unique, but also turn out a very interesting car. Not to mention the remarkable quality of the fabrication work of Mr. Spraker. ;)

Here is the Sonouto #121 914-6 GT car during a restoration, I believe it still belongs to Roy Walzer. Note the larger rear fender flares, presumably modified at the Porsche factory to accommodate larger 10x15 Minilite wheels and the more powerful flat eight 908 engine (that never made it into the car).

In 2003, I had a chance to buy a 'new' 908 engine for approximately $125,000, I didn't write the check and lost that opportunity (it wasn't just the cost of the 908 engine, the expense to adapt it to the 914-6 chassis was very costly too). I still think about that to this day... :rolleyes:

...the profile of my rear fender flares is a bit more settle, rounded. Those are 10x15 Minilite wheels in that back, at the time,
Porsche did not make a wide enough Fuchs wheel and the reason for the Minilites.

I had two pairs of those same factory 10x15 Minilites, but later sold them. Should have kept at least one of the pairs, but didn't.

...and I suppose I can always use spacers with my pair of 9x15 Minilites which I still have.
There is a story where these wheels came from; The 9x15 Minilites came in the trunk of the Bozzani 914-6 GT when Howard De Haven purchased the GT in 1971,

I was able to purchase them for my GT. That was 2004? Since, I have yet to find another nice original pair like them.

A /6 with a 908 motor would be very cool too,but if it were me I would go the route you've chosen.

...and this is what I chose to use as a front swaybar. Custom ordered and I believe no longer available.
If by chance you can talk Charlie into fabricating one for you, it will be a few months before you see it. Worth the wait!

Matt, you're a funny guy. Believe it or not, I not only miss driving the six, but also how it used to look. I understand.

As I continue to upload photos of the project historical progress, I'm more amazed to see how much work has been completed over the last few years (not to mention the expense). It seems as if it will never end, I keep raising the bar as I come up with yet more changes. This is certainly a moving target! :rolleyes:
