fuel leak at spark plug

She's a 1974 2.0 FI all original. Looks like fuel is dripping/streaming from one of the four (2inch braided) lines going to the spark plugs (actually about 4 inches below the plug). This is the line closest to the battery. Just wondering if I should replace this line or is this indicative of blockage? The picture below is oriented with battery out of view but upper right and spark plug is slightly in view at upper left.

Well, fuel lines and fuel do NOT run to the spark plugs as a starter piece of info. It is probably one of the lines to the injectors and if they are original then the lines have lasted waaaaaaaaaay past their intended life span. I would NOT drive the car since leaks from the system which is pressurized to about 30# could cause a fire as the hot exhaust is right under there and if you get a spark jump from a plug wire that could also cause a fire.

Having said that, the best fix is immediate replacement of all of them as if one is failing then they all are suspect. They can be replaced with stock ones if you can find them or make new ones with some good cloth covered German hose and good German hose clamps. If you decide to make new ones then that is a great time to put in a tee fitting and add a pressure gauge which will be very handy some day.

Not sure if our host sells replacement lines.. but I found a fellow in Atlanta sells Fuel line "kits" to replace all engine compartment lines. I liked the simplicity of a kit vs sourcing my own and having to determine the various sizes. Just saying.

And yes.. please update your fuel lines!

When I was a dealer tech, back in the '70-'80's, the replacing of fuel lines on carb'd and FI cars was a routine job, and that still remains. Back then we used the cloth braided hose and it had a short lifespan. Later the smooth, to the touch, hose came out and had a longer service life, but with a higher cost. I'm not sure what our host carries but quality choice is paramount here. Same goes for the hose clamps.
Folks over on the vw site, thesamba, are voicing concerns about the quality of certain hose sources. Some people have had fires because of this. I have and always will believe in hose replacement on a 12-18 month interval on my vw carbureted cars that use the cloth style hose. Some people think this stuff will last for years! I also replace my fan/gen belt at the same duration.
On a similar note, Gates Corp put out a tech bulletin back in Dec 2004 outlining the differences in the proper hose useage based on many issues. This country has been toying with different, reformulated fuels for years and what was good 20 years ago can't be applied today.
Hope this helps, Bill.
