I have a 73 1.7 that I just switched to a 76 2.0. I bought a four port muffler from PP (PEL-7801266) for a 73-74 2.0. Did I make a mistake? I am not sure what the difference in heat exchangers is and I am using the old 73 1.7 ones on the 2.0. What differences are there and will I need to get a different muffler ( I hope not). I would already know but my car is reigning as queen on my back yard without the engine installed as of yet. Of course I would like to resolve this problem before I get to it if it exsists. As always, thanks for all of the enlightenment!!!

it will not work, the differences between 1.7/1.8 and 2 liters are the heaters on the 2.0 have more up sweep and the hanger is different
you need to stay all 1.7/1.8 or 2.0

1.7 vs 2.0
I had a similar problem but with a 1.7 engine and 2.0 heat exchangers. I ordered a new muffler for the 1.7 engine in the car and after getting everything ready found that no matter what I did they just wouldn't line up! The engine was a 1.7 but the heat exchangers were for a 2.0. Worked out well though when I finally put in a 2.0 and didn't have to buy new heat exchangers.

The output flanges on the 1.7/1.8 heat exchangers are higher up off the ground (closer to the trunk floor) than those of the 2.0 motor. The 1.7/1.8 muffler has its inlets in the middle of the muffler, the 2.0 has its at the bottom of the muffler. The muffler hanger of the 2.0 also comes down lower, as it bolts to the output flanges of the heat exchangers.
Note that this all applies only to the 70-74 cars; the 75-76 cars have an exhaust that is completely different from the early stuff. There is no difference between the 75+ 1.8 and 2.0 exhausts, though. --DD

Thanks for the info. I placed my old muffler next to the new one and the inlet flanges are both at the bottom under the cans. I assumed that the PO had stock heat exchangers, but it looks as if they are from a 2.0. I am not sure exactly how to tell between 2.0 and 1.7 heat exchangers, but it looks more promising with the mufflers together.

1.7 & 2.0
the 1.7's flanges are S shaped (for lack of better description) and the 2.0's are straight.

The usual way it is phrased is that the 1.7/1.8 ones have a "kick up" in the pipes near the back, between the end of the heat exchanger wrapping and the muffler flange.
The 2.0 ones are straight all the way back. --DD
