Lose the points? Again

I want to do this, but can't remember which unit is best for the price. I already have an MSD-6 unit for my car, so I just want to get rid of the points. I am beginning to despise them. They seem to be able to go out of tune in less than a month.

So, name the manufacturer, cost, ease of install...etc. AND WHERE TO GET IT!

Thanks all,
Paul

This is listed, but I thought there were more out there for cheaper...maybe I am just getting tired of throwing money at it?

You know, Crane sells a nice unit that come with an optical pickup and the electronic ingition. It might be worth a call to them to see it they will just sell you the optical pickup. It may be possible to easily wire it up to trigger for you MSD. They must sell them as replacement parts or for someone who wants to port their Crane electronic ignition to another car that has a different distributor set up.

Let me know if you pursue that.... something I have thought about doing, but never got around to.

For the price, the Pertronix Ignitor will trigger your MSD-6 just fine; been running one for 2 - 3 years with no problems.

Does the MSD really help that much over a CD?

I use the CompuFire unit in both our 914s and they have been trouble free for 4 years! Buy them at a VW place and they are priced right. With the MSD box and 8.5mm wires you will get 15kvolts at the plug at idle and at least double that at high RPM! Good luck

Porsche Crest

I ditched my Pertronix after going through 2 units in under a year. Never quite worked out for me. Points, I understand.

I'm hoping to get into an MSD after saving up more nickles and pennies.

I use a MSD distributor with a 6 AL, it just plugs in. You can change the advance curve by using different springs. Got to love something that was designed to work with the other unit.

Part # 21101
Price 69.95
Model VW-2 points replacement module for BOSCH vacuum advance distributors

Is this it? I found this off of the compufire website. For some reason, the places I called in Atlanta do not have compufire parts in stock.
