Who has a 1970 914 for wiring help

I am looking for a wiring diagram or advice on tracing and locating two yellow wires from the ignition to the starter and where else? It looks as if two, one yellow and one red wire were connected twisted together with the crimped end cut off, and one yellow wire has the crimped end still on. This crimped end is large, wiring looks to be #8 gage wire. I would like to get to the bottom of this mess and turn this thing over. Any help or pictures of the starter or wiring connection in the engine bay would be greatly appreciated. 1972 wiring show only one wire from the ignition, paired with a red to the starter. I am trying to not melt this thing down into a bigger project than the last 20 years have provided. I want to hear this thing run. Help, please! Many thanks,

Sounds like someone added an extra wire in. Is this red wire at the starter end of things, or at the ignition switch end of things? The 70 wiring diagram for the starter should be fairly close to the 72 diagram; there is one yellow wire that goes from the ignition switch to the relay board, comes out of the relay board and goes straight to the starter. Inside the relay board, two more wires hook into the circuit; one for the cold-start valve and one straight to the fuel injection computer. No red wire. It is somewhat popular to splice a "hot start relay" in at the starter end of the circuit. This is somewhere between a band-aid and a fix for hot-start problems. Can you take some pics and attach them? --DD

Thanks for getting back to me Dave, the two yellow wires are running from the ignition switch and I will provided pictures as soon I can. I also have one 6 gage red wire and two smaller 8 gage wires running from the battery positive terminal that are suppose to go to the starter and connect somewhere. I do not know where they are meant connect. Both of the yellow wires run through the tunnel. I do not know where to connect the second yellow wire from the ignition. I can not find any wiring diagram that shows two yellow wires running from the ignition. Every wiring diagram I can find only indicates one. Must be a early production run but the car was one of the last built in 1970. Not sure where to look next or what to try. John

The fattest cable from the battery (+) terminal is the main one that carries the working current to the starter. I am not familiar enough with wire gauges to know the number off the top of my head, but I think I have read elsewhere that it's about a 4-gauge equivalent. This cable has a ring on the end, and that ring goes over one of the studs on the starter solenoid. The red wires on the battery (+) terminal go into the main wiring harness, and carry all of the current to run the rest of the car's electrical system. They go to places like the ignition switch, the fuse panel, and the power distribution block that lives up above the fuse panel. Also try asking your question over on 914world. Their 914 BBS is quite active and you may get more info from people who actually have 1970 914s--I do not. --DD

914 world Must be some sort of sick PP BBS joke. Bottom line is someone was in your car and hacked on the wiring. I HATE THESE people. My 70 914 was extremely stock with regards to wiring and it was a breeze to match up circuits with the pictures and wiring diagram in the haynes, Chilton and other repair manuals. As dave said yellow wire goes from switch through tunnel to relay board in engine compartment and comes out to the starter through the back engine tin piece. uses a push on connector to the spade. Hook a fresh battery to the starter and it will turn over.
