Side-shift end cover
The right side mounting arm on my transmission has broken off. Can this be welded back on? (is it suggested?) If I find another end cover, it would involve taking the transmission apart which I would rather avoid. Does anyone know of any welding/machine shop in San Diego that could weld aluminum magnisium? If it cannot be welded back on is there anyone with a parts car/transmission that has the end cover for a side shift tranny that they could sell me? Thank you.

Yes, it can be welded on, and is a very simple job - even with the transmisison still in the car. Check out this link:

Welding magnesium? Yes, it can be done. But I'm not sure I'd call it "easy". It's easier to locate a used end cone for the transmission and bolt that on.
A new part would be a lot likelier to not leak out the speedo drive, but I don't know how much a new one of those costs... --DD

If you want to try the welding route, I would check with the guys at Black Forest down the 15/163 off of Balboa. If they don't or can't do it, they will know a good shop that can.
Good luck! |

![]() Wayne/Dave: Would you guys have any idea of where I could locate one of these end-covers? My mechanic called every porsche contact he had and no one had this part. Thanks for all your help. |

I had one of the transmission mounting "ears" welded on 12-13 years ago and it served me well until I found a 914 in a pic-n-pull salvage yard. I replaced the welded end piece with a new part and, unfortunately, tossed the repaired one in an I'll-never-need-that-again mood.

Cory:
Let me check around a little for you. You just missed a brand new one - NOS - on e-bay. Anyway, early or late model tranny? Not that it matters, an early model cover will work on a late model, just need to leave the old shift link in place to keep the oil from spilling out. Although I suppose you could tap and seal the hole too. Anyway... e-mail me: redbeard914@hotmail.com James

Thanks all. I found a local shop that was able to weld it back together for a 100 dollars. Here is a picture, may be a bit blurry:

Oh well. I was going to sell you a used cover....I have 3.5 doner trannies and I'm sure we could have worked something out. I'm in the process of rebuilding a couple of good trannies.
I am sure you'll be happy with the weld job. And saving that cover is a good thing. These guys get rarer and rarer. James
