CV joint suspect wrong part

Hi,
My 74 914 is recently back on the road after completing a 3.2l conversion. I picked this project up from someone else so don't know the history on every part. After the first long drive I got under to look for leaks. I noticed a spatter of grease/oil in a radial pattern around the driver side inner CV joint. The CV joint looks new, but after comparing the two inner CV joints I notice something strange. The passenger side inner CV protective cap ( the surface the bolts and the two little pressure plates bear down on) has just the four holes. On the driver side the protective cap has the four holes with bolts and pressure plates but in addtion there are two additional holes that offer direct access to inside the Joint. I figure that grease is spewing out of these holes. Are there 911 inner CVs that have six holes?
Anybody have ideas about these holes and what I need to do?

thanks Mark

As far as I know, there should only be 4 holes. Some 911s had 6 hole CVs but 911 CVs are bigger than 914 CVs. I recommend changing the CVs to the 4 hole type. If the CV is new, you could simple replace the 6 hole part for a 4 hole part. I may have an extra 4 hole part I could send you.

Also, the 914s CVs may not hold up to the HP of a 3.2. It is possible to install 911 CVs into a 914. Requires adapters/spacer plates, but it can be done.

I recently rebuilt my CV joints. The new boots come with six holes...the extra two are right over the roll pins so they shoudl not cause your leak. I would be more leary that the CV gasket got replaced (the one between the joint and the flange on the tranny). That gasket gets forgotten alot (ask me how I know) and has a habit of slinging grease all over when it is not in place.

thanks

Thanks you guys.
The extra holes are right over the roll pins, but last night I just stuck a screwdriver in to see how deep they went and It appeared they went a long way. I will go back and clean the holes out of grease and investigate more carefully.
Why do you supose the new joints have the extra holes? Very curious , maybe the manufacturer is using the same cap for 911 cvs?

best Mark
