convert 928s4 to auto or ??

posted this on the 928 forum as well :
But I know how resourceful us teener guys can be abd since we are desperate I thought I would post on here as well :

I am doing some research for a friend . He recently got a 1988 928s4 , it is in excellent shape . Here is the problem : He is handicapped and can not drive a standard shift .
He was looking into converting it to an automatic .
I am not sure on the 928 what this would all involve ?
New tranny ( or used ) but will anything else need to be changed ?
Is there perhaps another way to go and retain the standard shift ?
Hand clutch set up perhaps ? Clutch by wire ?
He really wants to keep this car so I am determined to get him going . In case you are all wondering , the disability is he only has one leg . Any and all help will be appreciated !!

Anyone ever done this before ??

I always wondered when some one was going to do this....

How about a 12 volt solenoid hooked up to the clutch cable. Press button a button and you disengage the clutch. If you're really clever, you could build it into the top of the gear selector, so, as you grab the shift, you are operating the clutch.....

Sounds like one of those old VW AutoSticks! Except about 10 times quicker and 3 extra gears.

He doesn't need an automatic. A co-worker of mine was involved in a motorcycle accident last year leaving him paralized. Since he didn't want to give up racing, he converted his ITA Accord to use a hand throttle, hand brake and some trigger on the gear shift to actuate the clutch. He had his first race since the accident at LRP over the Memorial day weekend. Sounds like your buddy could use a similar set up as Peter's. See www.theracesite.com for more information on his car.

I don't have the time nor the room to do this for him .
Is there anyone in the NC,CA,AZ,UT area than can do this ?

This will be for use as a daily driver so it has to be a reliable setup and safe .

if it's good enough for a race car, it should be good enough for a track car. I'd check with your local "real" race shops as that's who did Peter's car. I'll be taking my car to Peter's guy for a cage soon, so I'll try to ask him about what set up he uses and what he'd recommend for the 928.
