Preventing rust from spreading
What can we do to clean the existing rust in the 914 and then seal it some way to keep it from spreading. It seems to me I've read about some kind of zinc spray or something that terminates it. Yes we did finally find some rust. (you guys aready knew there was some). Fortunatly, it seems to be limited to the battery tray and some other unprotected areas of body metal. So, how do we stop the maddness? Any magic chemicals out there?

I would check out the POR 15 website
http://www.por-15.com This stuff is legendary. I was just having a conversation today about it. I have to do under my battery tray. If you do a search on POR 15 on this board you will find many accounts of successful usage of this product, and the folks that answer the 800 number are very knowledgeable. Good luck!

I am by no means an expert, but I have some practical experience to offer. It seams to me that rust takes two forms, possibly due to the alloy it is affecting. The first is surface rust. Easily treated by sanding or sandblasting or maybe a chemical application. There are many commercial rust treatments in the paint store.
The second rust, or maybe advanced rust, is scalely, bubbley, expanding. This rust is cancer to me because it is hiding more rust beneath the layers. I feel this rust must be cut out or at least peeled down to solid metal. That's hard to do in some spots. Nevertheless, I beat on it to loosen and blow, vacuum and/or wash as much away as possible. Treatment with a phosphoric acid seams to counter the rust as long as you get to the bottom of the rust. I agree with the POR-15 as long as you have done as much as you can to rid the rust. I don't believe that you can paint POR-15 over scalely, loose rust and have the problem solved. There are other similar products that produce good results in protecting the metal from further deterioration. Hammerite is one such product. Do a search on the 911 board as there is some more info there about rust. |

Just what the Dr ordered to fix that battery tray and more. Thanks for the tip. I've changed this reply 3 times. That site has everything! Our only other problem is paint chips and one small 1/4" spot where the fender has rusted through. Poor paint repairs. Our goal will be to do full body and paint restoration, but for now we just want to stop the rust deterioration. Last question, is the website the best and only place to order this?
