AA 96mm piston set.

Picked up a set to suit 1700- 1800 in good condition without rings .
They are in good condition ,barrels are un- marked and the pistons are as new,I tried to source rings from AA direct and recieved no reply (twice??).
Have located rings which should be ok,are they worth fitting to my motor?,noticed the pistons are VERY heavy?thanks in advance.

Note that 1.7 heads have smaller registers that the cylinders fit into. If you have 1.8 heads, you'll need to make some spacers to keep the cylinders located correctly. Also, the 96mm cylinders that are made for 1.7 heads get rather thin at the top.

Double- and triple-check everything with those P&Cs. It is not uncommon for one or more to be out of round by a significant amount, and the ends aren't always flat and parallel to each other.

I'm not sure on the pistons; most of the complaints I have heard were about the cylinders.

For a few $100 you can get some nice big bore pistons made in USA light wieght, sliper skirt, ceramic coating, with piston rings. If these are heavy anchors of a piston, why bother with them?

also make sure the ring clearances are perfect and be sure that the wrist pin hole is spaced right. Make sure they are not big Bus pistons which would be low compression types, that will give you a dog of a motor.

do some more research to find our exactly what you have before using.

I have found it is almost never good to skimp on engine internal parts.

Have 1.8 heads (very good condition ,rebuilt) flycut for a bit more compression and ready to go,have noticed JE pistons for sale may go that way if the clearances are right for the barrels, thanks Dave.

Cabinetmaker, thanks that is true but that few hundred dollars means big $$$ freighted to my country and I don't know what i'am buying,USA or Brazilian made is fine but made in China, not for me.

I can see my earlier note wasn't as clear as I would like.

Since you have 1.8 heads, you would need the 96mm cylinders that are for the 1.8 or the 2.0 engines. (The OD of each is the same, the registers in the head are the same size.) You would need the pistons that are made for the 1.7 or 1.8 engines; the wrist pin is in a different location in the 2.0 pistons.

If you use the 96mm cyilnders that are made for the 1.7, that's where you need the spacer. Plus the 1.7 versions are thin at the top.

I believe that the AA P&Cs are made in China. At least shipping to NZ might be less expensive if you can get them straight from there?

Thanks Dave clear as mud now, thanks ,yes you can buy direct from China and get a good discount on the kits if you buy ten or twenty units .
Seriously I will get my engine machinist to measure up the barrels and check the heads for fit, happy to replace barrels or pistons according if the spec is out.
I scored these with a pallet buy of T4 motors so they were free in the sense of things so not too worried .

Cabinetmaker, thanks for the comments, have no intention to put cr#p parts in my motor,I posted cause I have no experience with AA parts and have read and seen mixed reviews hence my original post.
