It is a magnesium alloy, like the VW Bug crankcases, and the 70-77 911 crankcases.

Use the stock gaskets, they're plenty good and are designed specifically for the transmission.

EDIT: Actually, from the question, you may be trying to order parts for the wrong transmission. The 914 used a version of the early 911's "901" gearbox, and as far as I know was always made of magnesium. The "915" gearbox was used in later (77-86) 911s, and I think there was a mag version and an aluminum version. So double-check that you're getting gaskets for a transmission for a 914...

914: Elring 212.539 / 914 300 901 00

912, 912 USA, 911 T, E, S: Elring 212.571 / 901 300 916 00

Dave is right (as usual) about the material and the 914 gasket sets will have all you need for either the tail, or side-shift transaxles, with one possible exception.

The intermediate plate gaskets that set up the pinion depth in most of the kits I've seen in years don't have the same variety of thicknesses included in the early kits.

You might have to adjust another shim(s)... pinion shaft, or differential, or likely both, to get the proper contact pattern and lash on the R&P. And Dave is right...

The early 915's were magnesium and the later ones aluminum. But that's another thread entirely.

The 1st year of the 901 transmission I believe was aluminum, on the 911. All of the 914 transmissions were magnesium. The 915's changed to aluminum with the 3.0 engine. I also believe that the early 930's used the aluminum 915, even before 1978.
