914/6 clutch replacement

I am told the best way to replace the clutch on a 914/6 is to place a support under rear of the engine, remove the muffler, and drop the transmission. Are there any more detailed instructions available? I have replace my early 911 clutch by dropping the motor and transmission as a unit. I do have tools and a lift.

Either way works. If you just drop the trans, make sure to loosen the mounting at the front, because you will want to pivot the drivetrain down a little bit to make sure the transmission clears the rear panel.

Pretty much the detailed instructions are about what bolts to unbolt, and what wires and cables to unhook. Things like the transmission ground strap, the reverse light wires, the clutch and speedo cables, the starter wires (make sure you disconnect the battery before unhooking those!). And the CV joints, and I think that's basically it!

One or both of the upper bell housing bolts are actually removed from inside the engine bay. You'll find the nut on that end.

Or you can yank the whole drivetrain. There are a few more things to unhook, but it will give you the opportunity to do other stuff that is more difficult with the engine in the car....

Remove it as a unit. It's not very hard. That way if you need to do any work on the engine it will be right in front of you so you don't have to lean over the car.My back hurts just thinkin about leaning over the car.I just met a guy who un did the trans on a 914-4 and let it hang so he could change the trans. I don't advise this on a six. It's not very hard at all.You don't want to fight the trans when you put it back togather incase the clutch plate isn't in the correct place when you put the trans back in to the disc. Good luck. The biggest thing is the oil and lines and the mess you will be working in if you dont take it out from under the car.

I've always put it up high on jack stands, disconnected the CV's, cables, wires, starter, etc. put a jack stand under the engine and dropped it on my chest and rolled it out while on a creeper.

what to remove to do a clutch

If you know the service history and valve adjustment is not needed drop just the trans.
If you do not know history drop the engine and trans and do the valve adjustment while it's out.
If you have dropped your 911 engine and trans and you're comfortable with that you'll be good.
The biggest difficulties are balancing the package on your jack and getting the halfshafts clear of the starter and engine. Just remove the starter, it's only one more nut.
As for balancing the package it is very different than a 911 where you have the greater mass in your hands.
With the 914 6 all the weight is 4 feet away from your grasp.
Proceed with caution.
