Convert to Carbs
What would it take to convert a 73 to dual carburetors?

Carbs, manifolds, linkage, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, some wiring...
To properly take advantage of it, you'd want a different distributor and a different cam. Of course, replacing the cam requires splitting the case, which is basically a full engine rebuild... And then you'd want head work to support the flow that your cam produces, and an exhaust to deal with that, plus upgraded parts to stay together at higher RPMs, and ..... What's wrong with the fuel injection? --DD

Got my book and I see a couple things that may help but not sure yet. I need to check the timing and check the injector points below the distributor. What an oddity.
All new hoses have been installed as well as all new vacuum lines. Might still have a vacuum line out of place. Checking tonight against the book. Pete ![]() |

Sweet, got the 914 running smoothly. Points were the problem. I had an old VW 009 distributor laying around and it had a nearly brand new set of points. Installed them and set them to .015 and reinstalled the distributor and set to the previous setting. All works pretty good. Once warmed up what should the average idle speed be for the beast? Just want to know from those that actually drive these beasts. Runs much smoother now and yes, all the components work correctly.
Pete ![]() I am a happy camper. Now I can take it to work and back. |

You know, $400 aint bad at all to convert to Carburetors. That is if you already have a set. Many sets will run you that alone for the carbs let alone all the extra stuff. Can't see swapping out the cam to go carburetors. Done too many VW's to buy that one. Performance and stock.

Today I drove the 914 to work. Idle cold was just over 1100 rpm. Once warmed up it went down to about 900. Ran great. Now to get the tire wobble out. My tires were balanced twice. The second time was much better but there is still a wobble. Going to talk to the tire shop.
Pete ![]() Thanks all for your help. Learned a whole bunch stuff. |
