914 - 4 X 4
Has anyone ever seen/heard of a 4 X 4 conversion done to a 914?
There was a Morris Minor convertable parked down the street tonight with a drive line from a Bronco II. Shortened frame, ect. Let the flames begin!

AFAIK 4wd and mid-engine don't mix
since the gearbox is behind the engine, how you gonna set-up a driveline to the front wheels? I guess you'd have to turn your 914 into a front or rear engined car first I've seen pics of a "monster-truck" like 914, but I don't know if it was actually 4x4 Cheers, Jeroen |

Lamborghini were able to develope four wheel drive for their V-12 mid-engined supercars. Perhaps you could use some of the Lambos components to convert the 914. On second thought, maybe not! :-)

I just remembered that the Lambo has a tubular spaceframe. Sounds more and more like the kind of 4-wheel drive base you need. Strip a Diablo, hang some 914 body panels and you're home free!

That Lambo's front driveshaft went through the motor's oil pan to keep the components as tight up under the car as possible. As low as the floor pan is on our cars to begin with, any driveline would just about scrape the ground. I am assuming that we are talking about performance oriented 4 wheel drive (a la Carrera 4 or Audi Quattro) versus jacked up monster truck style. Right? Please tell me I'm right!

Slightly off topic, but I've been wondering how a 914 would fare in something like the Rallys I often see on Speedvision. You know, racing on dirt roads. They don't seem to run them in this country much, but they sure look like fun.

What about running a second transmission in the front trunk? Create a second drive dhaft from the engine and run it through the passenger compartment (The pipe it will run in will make a great arm rest!). Only thing is how to steer?
Wait, I've got it. Get one of those front wheel drive cars and install a second engine in the front trunk with the steering and suspension. Put the second gas pedal next to the first and tune the two engines to run together. To save Gas, you can shut off one of the engines... James

No, no, no.....
Do it redneck style..... Get a short bed chebby, shorten the frame and drive shafts to get the 914 wheel openings to be centered over the wheels, install a 6"suspension lift, cut the front trunk and wheel wells out of the 914 shell for the chebby motor (with a hole in the hood for the blower), put the gas tank where the 914 motor usually resides. Oh yeah - gotta make some tube bumpers to accomidate the wench. No problemo........ Scaling back my sarcasm a bit, can you emagine the tow vehicle possiblilites? -s

Well, I was thinking that you could get some distance out of the 914, if you made a fuel tank that _FIT_ the entire engine compartment. But then I remembered that those Lifted, etc things get maybe 3 miles per gallon.

There is a solution to the beyond repair rusted 914 chassis. Mount it to a truck frame and use it for a tow vehicle to the races. A 914 towing a 914 on a trailer, now that would be something to see.

Hey BRM9148, do you happen to have any more info on that pic you picked up? That seems like it would be fun to build and I have an extra 914 body that is a great canidate for just such a conversion. Maybe you have a website you got this from? It is one sweet ride.
