If I had a nickle for every virus infected e-mail I'd received...
I'd have about 5 bucks. $7.50 tops.... James

...But the fun part is that some of the viruses (work KLEZ, for instance) will spoof the mail headers with different addresses from the sender's address book. So Bob's infected system will send a note to Sam, but the "From" address will be from George...
And if Sam's address is no longer valid, George may get a "bounce" of a message that he never sent... Yeah, I get those too. For some reason, I'm in a lot of peoples' address books... ![]() --DD

Viruses do infect Macintosh computers too, though much less often than PC's; see The Macintosh Viruses.
"... Get a Macintosh" doesn't make you immune to viruses; periodically updated antivirus software protection does. PC viruses are always news because PC's are just more prolific; humm, wonder why? ![]()

No ... I'm not getting into that; my SOHO has both, if only because my grown Computer Graphic Arts kiddles have to have at least one (1) "Mac" to stay proficient.
Macs are OK ... I guess (proceeding to duck). Remember ... it's a 914 forum; play nice. "Hello, Dave? DAVE? I feel my mind going ..." ![]()

I was a certified Apple tech waaaaaay back in college, when the Macs first came out. (I worked on the Mac-Plus, SE's, II's, etc).
Back then, and many years after, viruses (virii) were extremely common on in the Mac world. In fact this was essentially before PC viruses became prevalent; most viruses and worms were UNIX and Mac-oriented at that time. A lot of what I did was cleaning up the mess left my these things -- and we only billed $25/hour back then, can you believe it? (I won't tell you what my current billing rate is, but it's...ahem...somewhat higher.) I was also around to see the spread of the 1989 UNIX worm (I forget what it was named, but it was the first BIG one) across hundreds of UNIX boxes on a major tech campus. To make a short story long, practice safe computing and get a good antivirus package PLUS a firewall or two. I use the Trend stuff myself, along with hardware and software based packet filtering.

From my understanding, the latest virus send you 2 files. One is the virus as some form of executable. The other is a random file from "My Documents". And it also contains a random choice of a bunch of phrases.
Zone Alarm has a "mail safe" feature which renames any type of executable or zip file to something else. You can then put them on your disk and scan them and delete them if they are a virus. If they aren't you can rename the extension. James

There's a new version of the KLEZ virus going around that is real tricky.
It takes names out of your address book and sends out e-mails to everyone, but disguises itself as coming from someone else in your address book! Last week one of my friends recieved a virus-infected e-mail from me that did not come from my computer. I have NAV 2000 and it is updated regularly, and the virus was sent during a time when my computer was not even turned on for over 24 hours. As soon as i found out about it I did a complete system scan and my system was clean as a whistle. Thats probably what happened with the virus from a914lvr. I went one step further and deleted all names in my address book. I wonder if we all did that if it would reduce the spread of these virus'. BTW, I recieve avout 10 e-mails a week that contain the KLEZ virus. NAV always catches tham imediately (I hope). |

Hey computer guy's, I've heard that if you make up a bogus e-mail address name like "AAAA", or what ever it takes to make it #1 in the address book. Then you make up some make the actual e-mail address for it like "virus alert" but don't put a dot com/net/org on the end (your e-mail account will tell you that it's not a valid e-mail address, but accept it anyway). The premise is that if/when you do get a virus, they start at the first address and work their way down the list. If the first address fails to go through, then the virus terminates itself and you're left with a "undeliverable mail" notice. It won't keep you from getting the virus, but it might stop it from proliferating itself. I got "Klez'ed" myself a few months ago (it turned me into a Newt...I got better

Seriously? Hmmmm. None of my e-mail addresses have a hyphen. But that is interesting that you got one from RED-BEARD914. Have you deleted it? If not, can you forward it to me? I'd like to look through the forwarding log on the e-mail to see where it originated.
James
