Need Help With This 914

Hi All,
I am a new member here on the forum, and completely new to the Porsche 914. I have learned a lot on this forum and the '914 Buyers Guide' has been a huge help. I have finally found a 914-4 that really seems to look good and is only a few hours from me. However, I don't have an 'eye' for these 914's like most of you do. The only red flag that comes up to me is that it is a '71 listed with a 1.8 liter. I know that Porsche did not make the 1.8 until '74.

Sorry for rambling everyone... but would anyone mind taking a look at it and see if it is something worth pursuing.

914 fs

a 71 with a 1.8 and only 42,000 miles and no rust. not original, big claim when key areas are not shown. engine, side panels, underneath, trunks, wheel wells.
I would keep looking. It shows nice with good paint and that may be the factor that has your attention (and maybe impatient to get one). But the mechanical factors are important. Have you considered getting a 914 person to go with you or get a 914 PPI? there are owners that may be able to help that are close by.

Very true, you are right it does appear to be a very clean nice looking car. Maybe I will call the dealership today and see if they can take pictures of some of the areas that usually are problematic. I have a few Porsche friends, but none are really into the 914's. Maybe I could find someone on here that is also in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

Very clean appearing car for what they have shown thus far. But as has been already mentioned, they have elected not to show most of the problem areas. Look at those or have someone look at them and see if they will send pictures of those areas. Car does look nice so far though.

There has been some discussion of this car over on 914world; you may be able to find the threads if you search. One was when it was listed on evil-bay. Again, folks are leery of the lack of engine bay shots and typical rust area pics.

If you don't find anyone on here who would be willing to look at the car with you, you might find someone over there that would be.

Thanks again,

search for a 914

sorry to hear it was sold, but "there will always be another one for sale".
Keep looking and be patient, maybe allow an experienced owner to provide some assistance.
yesterday I was in review of 914's for sale on samba.com, I found one in Los Angeles area that I actually renovated and the price is grossly higher than they paid for it from me, because they are a dealer of "classic cars". they may have done some things to make it more pretty.
a few of us know this "flip" game.
So that sends us a flag that the price is higher than most others of its quality.
A few of us have go to sources for parts and cars that can be of help in your search. if we can be of assistance many of us would be glad to provide.

Interesting comments ,would this car really be worth that much as a "'classic" with its non original engine I don't personally dis the 1.8 cause I like them but not there power output .
Original unrestored cars of this model should and will in the future realize top resale prices, look @ the 911 market for instance.
No rust scary claim to make considering it has traveled 42,000 miles on the road and rained on for many years,we are seeing a lot of rust free cars dismantled for various reasons and bingo rust is found, they are just old cars after all.

Jared I wouldn't worry about missing this one,you could buy one on here or any other of the 914 forums from a true "P car guy" you will bypass the dealer markup and BS and get a better car, thats how my future purchase 914 purchase is happening, good luck.

They rusted on the boat coming over here in the 70s--so "no rust" should be treated as an extraordinary claim which would require extraordinary proof.

I know of one car owned by a friend that is about rust free as you can get. low mile, original paint stored in garage for about 20 years. we have been thru the whole car, engine out, suspension off, interior out etc... and we have not seen any rust of note. does some rust exist? well certainly. All cars will have a molecule of rust someplace at the least, even before being loaded on a boat.
that car was a cool color, orange rocks!!!
