pertronix ignition problem
I just installed a pertronix ignitor in my 75 1.8, L-Jet and it runs like sh... Acts like only three cylinders are firing. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas? The car ran really well with points and condenser (I thought), but wouldn't pass smog due to excess emissions at low RPMs. After failing smog, I readjusted the valves (way off) and timing. Then for good measure, I thought I would install the pertronix unit since I heard from this bulletin board that it helps low rpm idle (I know, nobody said anything about better smog results). Does anybody know if this unit has any effect on low RPM smog results? And again, what am I doing wrong with the installation? BTW, my local NAPA parts store first sold me Pertronix part number 1281, which is apparently made for a small block chevy - didn't even come close to fitting. After calling Pertronix, I traded for PN 1847V. Is this the right PN? Thanks in advance.

the 1847v is the right part number, and since it's firing at all, the unit should be working. If my understanding is correct, you adjusted the timing before the pertronix unit?.. you might want to check the timing again. also, check to see if any of the sparkplug wires going to the distributor are loose...
good luck, hope you like the unit after you get it working.. |

I checked the wiring and all seems to be OK. I am not getting any spark to the #4 cylinder tho. Is the unit defective? It runs fine when I reinstall the points and condenser. What gives?

to follow up - yes the unit was defective. After installing a replacement, the car runs like a champ. Now to pass smog . . .
