Creamsicle or Dreamsicle?

Seems to be some legitimate confusion on this quintessential P-car issue, what to nickname the Limited Edition cars. What is your opinion? A quick websearch locates various references from ice cream to cocktails to candles, even one that interweaves the two terms...Either way they are all treats.

This is a Creamsicle, its a popsicle...

This is a Dreamsicle...from this website:

http://cocktails.about.com/library/recipes/bldreamsicle.htm

1 1/4 oz. Amaretto, Orange juice, Cream

Shake with ice, Serve on the rocks, Strain to serve up or Blend with ice for Frozen variation

Or another from here:

http://www.angelfire.com/bc/incredible/xSF93dreamsiclepie.html

Dreamsicle Dessert

1/2 c. butter
2 pkgs. chocolate wafers, crushed
Orange sherbet
Vanilla ice cream

Mix butter and crushed wafers and press 2/3 into 2 (9"x13") pans. Top with 1/2 quart orange sherbet in each pan. Layer vanilla ice cream on top, about 1/4 quart per pan. Place 1/2 quart of orange sherbet on each pan, again. Top with rest of crumbs. To layer ice creams, you may need to soften slighlty.
Freeze overnight. Each pan will serve 12-15.

And then its a candle from this website:

http://www.wicksworks.com/dreamsicle-candle.html

"Dreamsicle" is our proprietary name for a candle that appears to be a wonderful beverage and yet evokes, for many of us, childhood memories of when we last had a CreamsicleŽ.

I had always heard or used Creamsicle until this BBS when I heard Dreamsicle. Maybe it's a area thing....or Eastcoast vs Westcoast? Either way there were only a few in Seattle

i'd say creamsicle for sure

dreamsicle? sounds like someone just made it up to "invent" a drink and another dessert without infringing on the creamsicle trademark name, same with the candle...

unless one was a drunk with a sweet tooth or into candles, they wouldn't know what the heck a dreamsicle is

now what to call the ivory/green cars??

Here is more to add to the confusion from this site. There probably is no right and wrong...kind of a cultural difference more than anything:

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_356a.html

Dear Cecil:

OK, Popsicles and Fudgesicles I understand. So what's the difference between a Creamsicle and a Dreamsicle? --C.S., Chicago

The sherbet-like shell of the Creamsicle is identical to that of the Dreamsicle, but the payoff inside is ice cream in the former, ice milk in the latter. The difference in price, last time I checked, was about a nickel.

Naaaah, Jeff--it's just a friendly hug, right??

BTW, I just talked to Rich B over at HPH. He says he's only seen two "Grasshopper" LEs in all the time he's run HPH. And that the last time was long ago enough that he doesn't really remember what the green looked like.

Thanks, Dave. Coming from Rich B that means something. What a very rare car.

I like that name Grasshopper for the Light Ivory / Green Limited Edition cars...sure would like to see one and know more details about them. If anyone has one or knows of one please contact me at any time.

Anyone know what color green was actually on the LE, ie the official paint code? Or is that also part of the mystery....

I have only seen one "Grasshopper" myself over the years as a "chick" friend had one. She had beat the h**l out of it due to no maintainence, etc...."What you have to add oil?"
I didn't even know the "Grasshopper" nickname. I had always though of them as the "Kermit" cars. Heck, I never wanted one as they were pretty "funky".

The Creamsicle cars were cool looking as well the Bumblebee cars.

Hey Geoff, do you still know where to find that girlfriend? There may only have been as few as 100 cars made in that color...

The Dr. says in the 700 tips book that the 1974 Limited Edition ‘Green’ accent color is “6710 or 226”. That’s all he says and there is no other reference. I have searched the internet paint color codes and have not found anything yet that matches those numbers.

The Dr. also says that the Bumblebee LE yellow accent color is “Saturn Yellow” and offers reproduction yellow side stripes to match that color. Saturn Yellow is not the LE color, it has been confirmed to be Sunflower Yellow (L13K). Given that, his green color spec is suspect unless it can be confirmed. AA does not offer side stripes for the Green LE cars.

I wonder if the color is Ravenna Green. Ravenna is a bold, stock 914 color (the other LE cars were also bold stock colors).

Another reference I have found is VW paint codes in 1974 have the following colors which may be contenders:

L65K Ravenna Green
L61A Cliff Green
L60A Tropical Green
L64K Zambezi Green

Anyone know for sure, or have a Grasshopper car to confirm? Or photos?

Jeff -

I seem to recall that the white/green LE was a combination of Light Ivory (L80E) and Irish Green (L60E). This is even though L60E was not available as a color choice for the 1974 model year. I'm just going from memory here, so it is possible that I may be mistaken. I should be able to verify this though when I return home on Thursday.

I have never actually seen one of the white/green LE cars and have only seen a few pictures of them. I've seen Bumblebees and Dreamsicles but the white/green cars seem to be very rare.

Porsche Crest

Well, not to go off the subject, when I was a kid, creamsicles were also known as 50-50 Bars.

Thanks to Photoshop I have tried to render a 914 LE in Irish Green...Does this look like the right color for the Grasshopper?

There is a 914 LE ad that has all 3 versions pictured, someone has got to have that ad.

So the official answer is that there is no official answer. Bummer. Where's the 914 Ruling Council when you need them? It is an outrage that in this day and age there is still confusion over nicknames. BTW, I really like the Grasshopper name. But then, I also prefer Dreamsicle. Maybe it's because I never like those iced treats. Now I'm on a hunt to own and restore a Grasshopper. (not really, just in my head)

Thats the problem with nicknames...they can be arbitrary. Lets try a poll to see what the majority prefers.

Have you tried contacting Otto or Brad Mayuer? Either of those guys would seem to be a good source to answer your question.

Jeff, that girlfriend was 20 odd years ago and the car was already beat to ***** when I saw it. I remember a lighter green than Irish Green but heck that was long ago. The car was ugly to say the least....that's why it didn't sell well IMHO.
