While the Tranny is out....
I have been driving my 914 for about 2 years after an ALL-BUT-THE-TRANNY rebuild. I replaced all the engine bushings and engine seals, oil galleys, etc... at that time maybe 7000 miles ago.
I crossed my fingers that the Tranny internals would be OK. Outside stuff was replaced: Seals, bushings, etc... So the Tranny was not ok. Syncros or dogteeth and sliders need help. I have it out now and it has been sent to an expert for rebuild. I see some sort of an leak coming from behind the flywheel, so I am going to take the Flywheel, PP, and clutch off and investigate while the Tranny is gone. ![]() ![]() The leak may be the main seal so that is an option to replace for sure. Galleys should be OK. Remember, all that stuff only has about 7000 miles on it. Last edited by malcolm2; 01-14-2015 at 10:42 AM.. Reason: add |

With 7K miles on it, the only stuff you should replace are the things that have gotten messed up. If you wind up breaking something taking it apart, definitely replace it. But even the "wear parts" shouldn't have noticeable wear at only 7000 miles.
That said, there are one-use parts. If you are definitely taking the flywheel off, you will likely want to replace the lock plate. If the flywheel bolts have been in and out more than once or twice, think about replacing those. And always replace used crush-washers. If there is anything you forgot to replace last time (like the throwout arm bushing) that will be worth doing here. If you do replace the flywheel, check the crank end-float (using the old bolts and lock plate) to make sure it hasn't gone out of spec with the new flywheel. ...And that's about all I can think of... --DD

as above....flywheel seal leaking @ 7k miles ???,might pay to find out why, could have been fitted wrong or not good german oem one,the silicone based ones (orange) seem to last very well if fitted correctly.
I personally only fit them in dry on the sealing surface (case) and put a small amount of engine oil on the running surface (crank),had no problems so far.

may be leaky rear main seal, if you remove the flywheel do not reuse the old O-ring, use new. even if seals found to not be leaking. if you get a new flywheel you need to reset the end play, and if flywheel is reground you may need to re-adjust the throwout bearing pivot arm ball, else clutch wont disengage at full pedal stroke.
the main seal may be NOT leaking, BUT instead one of the oil gallery plugs maybe leaky at the rear of the engine case. that may need fixing, them old plugs do sometimes work loose and leak, if they pop out completely when motor running, you often destroy the motor from sudden complete loss of oil. some times the plugs are tapped to accept a threaded plug, for ultimate in protection. Some times the plugs are epoxied over to stop weeping, however epoxy may not secure a loose plug from popping out! |
